Most of the large lathes like that have really slow top speeds. That's no problem for big stuff, but anything smaller in diameter ends up being harder to turn well because of the slow surface speeds at the tool.
Not to discourage anyone form the buy, but in my experience a smaller lathe (9-12" swing) is a lot more useful for 'car stuff'. Not to mention a lot easier to find space for and move.
Edit to add: Lodge and Shipley lathes are really well respected, but based on the age of this one, top spindle speeds will be low.
I really want that, simply because Shipley is my last name. Of course, sensibility has to reign. Still, Oooooh, BIG!
It's also got a 3 phase motor. Won't work on most residential electrical services without a phase converter (which may cost more than the lathe is worth)
