I have an old Snap-On box. I have had it for about 15 years. It is the old style with slides and no ball bearings, it has lived a tough life but it is robust. I just measured it and it's 52" x 22". Most of the drawers work (except the big one on the bottom, it has no slides).
I am considering stripping it and painting it and fixing it up or just replacing with a US General. What do people think? One one hand it is a Snap-On, but on the other hand the new USG is probably better in every way and way less work, albeit money out of pocket.

The USG are very nice boxes, and that's the easy button. If you have the room, get the 42 and 27 for way more storage for a little more $ than the 56. It's also worth calling a few stores (if they're close) to see if they have floor models or scratched ones at a discount, you'd be surprised.

The floor model one is a good idea. I am friends with the manager of the local store. I could ask her to keep an eye out, I am not in a dire situation so I have time.
I have the us general box and like it. My only regret was not cross shopping the Menards Master Force boxes. They have positive latching with full width latch handles that I love. The feel of them is more "premium" than the USG stuff. Check them out if you have one nearby.

same price as the USG box. Feels like better quality.
If the snap on box drawer glides feel notchy even when in good lubricated condition I'd sell it and move on. I hate scratchy drawer glides.
I have the usg tool cart w the good drawers and its ok. I ended up getting a bigger husky box and its nicer for similar price when its on sale.

Do you have access to a Snapon rep? They will provide you with new slides for free. They take a while to order in these days, they don't stock them on the truck anymore.
One of the techs in my shop has several 90's era Snapon boxes with slides and our representative went through the box with him and gave him a dozen or so replacements. It still works very well. Well enough he doesn't feel the need to upgrade.
