stupid question, but is there a playable demo for PC?
In reply to aircooled :
Yes that helped Air! I ordered the Drive Hub. I will keep everyone posted on how it works as soon as it arrives.
I should probably order one now also since there is a discount. I will need it eventually.
Another PC2 question: is there any capability to customize the paint on the cars? I suspect not. If not, the limited vintage cars will make any league races for those unlikely. A field of 20 identical Lotus Type 40 cars would be pretty silly.
P.S. I am suspicious that PC2 will be a better league game then GT Sport at this point. I did take a look at the car list for Forza 7.... sigh... if only, LOTS of cool old cars and fully customizable paint... double sigh... ( I know, my problem )
There is no livery editor, but a lot of liveries (20ish) for each of the cars I've played with so far. Granted that isn't a wide variety of cars. It's the Ginetta G40 starter car, a Formula C, and modern GT3s. If I get a chance I'll look at a few of the older cars for you.
I'm with you air, there are days that I wish Forza was on PS4 just so I could customize and play with cool cars.
That said, Project Cars is probably the best sim racing game on consoles and not too far off a rFactor types. It's difficult but so satisfying when you get it right.
Assetto Corsa on PC is the bee's knees when it comes to customizable racing sims. As good as PC, better graphics than rF and tons of community mods.
Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever return to the GameShark days when you could mod a console game ad-hoc.
Here is a nice little starter kit for those interested:
Thrustmaster T300RS PS4/PS3 Racing Wheel & Project Cars 2 Video Game Bundle
$325
It's only a two peddle setup, but that should work for most. It looks like you get $50 more off with a gift card.
Special ends 9/2
It has its parts that are a review, but it also does a fair share to provide a state of the game. I'm probably just conditioned to there being bugs, I lived through PC1. It's kinda like Gran Turismo being delayed, at this point you should just expect it.
That said, I've run into several bugs in my playtime. I would say they are more irritating than game breaking but your mileage may vary.
If there are any severe issues we can delay the series, but I expect to see patches in rapid succession.
The tech support guys from Drive Hub got back to me and say their product is ideal for using non supported wheels in PCars 2. I hope so. I already ordered it!
Brad is right about the amazing sound in PC2. I made a few "excursions" around a few tracks and with a few different cars on the controller. I hate the controller but wanted to see the tracks and hear the cars. The tracks look very good but the sound is amazing. Having just come from the IMSA race at Laguna Seca, I can tell you that the cars sound exactly like they do in person. The MBs and the Corvettes both have big rumbling V8s but they have a slightly different pitch. The game has it spot on. The other sounds add to the immersion. The tire and brake noises are realistic and useful - unlike the lame tire squeal of GT6. The UI is easy to navigate. Car setup options are in real measurements and accurate to each specific car, or you can tell your race engineer what handling issue you are having and he will make the setup change for you.
My Drive Hub is coming USPS Priority mail. I can't wait to turn some laps!

Air, there are 20 different liveries for each car in the game including vintage and street cars.
Edit: OK, 'most' have 20 different liveries. Some have up to 40 (Nascar Ford) some have just 2 (or the number of real liveries out there like the Toyota P1 cars). All of the ones with fewer choices are in series where there are multiple car choices. Anything that you might want to run as a spec series (Indy roadsters? Lamborghini Trofeo series?) has many liveries. An example is the Indy cars which have all the liveries of all the actual cars. Same with the 962's or 935's. For many cars the different choices are in pairs for team cars. The bottom line is there won't be a situation where identical cars will be on track.

I grabbed some screenshots of the liveries for the older cars to give you an idea of what is available. A couple cars only have like 4, but most have between 12-20 (real and fictional).
Here's a video of my career (Ginetta G40 Juniors). It shows some of the weather, live track, and lighting effects. There's a weird glitch from Twitch and it missed the first couple corners. I cut a corner (traffic) and gained a position. I was giving a message that said I had 30 seconds to give back the position.

Hmm. A bit concerning to hear about the online concerns. I guess we will see. Clearly we have had issues with GT6 and no idea if GT Sport will improve on this (you would hope so since it's a pay service now!)
Perhaps the biggest race will be between PC2 and GTS!
I still have no idea why GT decided they should change their theme and effectively come out with the almost the exact theme as PC2. It's kind of like when the come out with a big summer movie, and another studio has one with almost the same subject... argh.
I of course would prefer something that replicated this (without the obviously overly aggressive driving of course), the sound is glorious:

Nicely done sir. Even almost the same paint job.
Which car is that. It seem pretty bouncy. Not very modern race car like. Sound is not quite as wild as the above, but certainly better then most of GT6 sounds.
The tire sounds are interesting (the review hated them). They do sound a bit strange. Maybe a bit low frequency? Kind of depends on the tire of course.
You posted an Austin, I posted an Aston. They are almost the same thing.
It was an '59 Aston DBR1/300
The tire sounds seem to depend on the vintage and tire type of the car. Fortunately, all sounds are adjustable to taste.
OK, the DriveHub adapter arrived. Did it make my non-supported wheel work? Yes. There are a few glitches: To make it work you have to run your controller through the hub as well. Then the controller no longer works, only the wheel. That could be fine except for a couple of issues: If your wheel, like mine, doesn't have some of the buttons such as "PS" or "Options" then you have a problem. They won't work on the controller as long as the wheel is enabled. PCars 2 uses the option button to return to the pits if you are stranded on track. PS is used to exit the game. Also, the headphones and mic plug into the controller. They are non functional with this adapter. I had to plug headphones into the TV jack to hear the cars. There may be a work around for the headset by buying a Bluetooth headset. I'm going to shop. It might also be possible to regain use of the controller buttons by using a second controller. Don't know. I'm going to try it. I'll post the results.
Meanwhile, Brad and I were able to spend a couple hours on a test session. The driving dynamics are really good. It makes you work for it but it's fun. There were a few things, mostly stuff we didn't know how to do yet. (Such as I couldn't figure out how to get my pit crew to fix my damaged hood....grrr....fire them all!) Online play was seamless and glitch free.
I think I know the answer, but can a PS3 controller be used at all (e.g. plugged in).
I suspect not since that would not protect us from not having to spend money unnecessarily on new hardware.
Good to hear the hub works though, I need to pick one up before Sport is released (I suspect there will be a run on them). I already have BT headsets, but my wheel does not have the PS button.

We were testing at Spa, fastest times were:
Argo: 2:25.7 - Invalidated - 911 GT3
Brad: 2:26.1 - Nismo GT-R GT3
For comparison, I checked the time trial leader boards. Fastest time I could see was a 488 GT3 @ 2:18.9
We still have some work to do to get up to the speeds / times we were getting close to in PCars1
In reply to FlightService :
I don't know about that. I haven't really been driving anything for awhile (kids take all my time). So, I'm rusty. I also don't really remember what times I ran at Spa in PC1, I just remember that at the end of the series we were getting pretty close to the top times. I think we'll get there, but I just need more practice.
I would be surprised if times were faster than PC1. It's a tougher but more accurate physics model. Fun to drive but a learning curve. I don't feel that I drove anywhere near the potential of the car, plus we were using the default setups.
OK, I was able to use a second controller to connect the microphone/headset. Everything is now working correctly and the buttons that I don't have on the wheel can be used on the second controller. The first controller still has to be connected through the DriveHub and doesn't serve any other function. The Bluetooth headset wasn't an option since the Bluetooth headsets do not support a microphone. The only trick is to make all menu selections with the wheel, otherwise if you make any selections with the controller it will change to using the controller for driving. Not really a problem. Everything works as it should now. The DriveHub also includes a neat feature: a set of shift lights that work correctly within the game and are actually helpful with some cars. DriveHub seems to be a good product. I recommend it instead of spending money on a new compatible wheel.
