I've been playing it on the xbox. I decided that I wasn't going to buy any gold, just get what I can with silver from killing bad guys. Its still a crap shoot if you get paired with a buncha 8yos that are dead within 30 seconds or some pay for play guys with camo tanks & gold purchased shells (with headsets & actual strategy). I find it hilarious (and frustrating) that 2 minutes in I look up and see myself and an arty left with 10 red tanks heading our way.

today the big "grand final tourney" ended... my team ended up 15th... that's the top 1%... winnings = amx 13 57 (new prem tank), 30k of gold, 3 months of prem time, coated optics, GLD, vents, 5 lgs repair kits, 5lg first aid kits, 5 auto fire ext... almost $200 worth of winnings... not bad for a guy who started playing 8 months ago playing with a slightly above average team ;-) ...

Is there a GRM clan?

There isn't a GRM clan that I'm aware of. There's really only a few of us that play. The good news is its fairly simple to figure out. If you have any questions, just post them here. At a minimum, Yamaha, Donalson and I usually check in once or twice a week. There's also a bazillion Youtube's, but I've never needed them.

Thanks. I've had mixed results thus far in random battles. It is fun, though!

welcome aboard...

it is a fun game and the most difficult thing to learn/understand is the spotting mechanic... aka "why did I get killed by invisible tanks"

if you are video inclined these are a few good vids to help you understand some of these little things... once you do understand them you'll understand the game better than 90% or so of players...

https://youtu.be/HX0znHSeDMU

this one has a lot mroe info but it's also a lot longer... https://youtu.be/L68OWMyO-3A

if you'd rather read... http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/287327-kingalphyns-noob-friendly-tips/

no need to rush up the tiers... play tier1 and 2 until you get a decent handle on the spotting mechanics... from there get up to tier5/6 and sit there until you can train your commander to 100% for noobs I reccomend moving up to the russian kv-1 as you go though the t-28 which is a great but difficult tank to play (fast, mobile, great gun but it's the size of a barn with no armor)... then you move into the kv1 which is slow, well armored with a nice gun where you learn how to heavy tank (angling, side scraping etc).

any questions hit me up... I'd happily run though some training rooms or whatever... could use my teams voice chant or whatever if wanted...

don't rush up the lines too quickly unless you want a practice in frustration... in my first 200 games I ran up to tier4 based on what some of the guys here said about how fun a tank is... it wasn't soo fun getting killed within a min or so into the game because I didn't understand how to spot while not be spotted... I started over again, spent about 1500 games at tier1-3 which was excessive... but I had a very solid grasp of mechanics

and lastly... http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/World_of_Tanks this is your friend... when you want to figure out what your next tank is going to be you can get some basic reading about the tank, what to expect, how to set it up, how to upgrade it etc... it's not perfect and I don't agree with some things on occasion but its a great help

Wow, thanks!

I've already goofed a bit and sunk a lot of money into a couple of so-so tanks thinking I could improve them.

I need to read up before my next purchase.

Got rid of the T60 and decided to stick to 'Murican stuff. So far I dig the T1, T18 and T82. I just put the 105mm gun on the T82...HOLY E36 M3 that thing hits hard!!!

Try the 'Merican lights too. They are a hoot once you get to the M3.

just beware light tanks... most of them when they get to tier4 turn into "scouts" aka they get the same matchmaking you get in a tier5 tank... so you'll see tier7 tanks... some are fine with that but others have a difficult time penning their own tier sometimes.

I personally am not a fan of td's so much... they can be fun because they do so much dmg... but they are very inflexable, to most noobs I suggest sticking to meds and heavies for starters... the kv1, t-34 and m4 sherman are good places to start heading for (although the m4 requires a bit of self mutilation with the m3 lee)

for the t-60 line I've never played that group... but as I recall the t-80 is one of the few tier4 lights that doesn't get scout MM... so it's not a bad way to head to the t-34.

The T82 bumped me into higher tier games and I got slaughtered quite a bit and felt like a burden to the team. Most of the time I messaged everyone with a "I'm a noob" or "Bullet magnet engaged" or something along those lines. lol

I picked up a T2 medium and have been getting better at the lower tier maps. 73 battles so far!

None of the missions or campaigns are available, though...

Here's a shocker:

Not only am I new to W.o.T., I'm new to online gaming as well ...it's going to take me a while to figure things out.

Imagine a guy who somehow was frozen in carbonite sometime in the mid '70's and thawed out in the mid 2000's... that's me when it comes to internetty stuff.

A few thoughts:
You need Tier IV before the campaigns start. Sadly, for some of the individual campaign missions, you'll find you need to cause damage amounts that aren't realistic until you are several tiers higher. My advice would be don't worry about the campaigns. Start/activate them once you have Tier IV tanks of the various classes and then forget about them. Periodically, you'll finish one or two pretty much by accident. Trying to accomplish a particular mission will make you a generally terrible player. Donalson can attest we got A LOT of kills when the missions/campaigns first came about because people played really stupid trying to finish them. They are most useful as an occasional "fund raiser". For now, just be sure you log in once per day (even if you don't really have time to play) and the "login bonus" will give you all the cash you need for right now and some free premium days/equipment.

As for playing the TD's, one of the early login bonuses is a camo net. That's a HUGE help when playing TD's. You basically have to camo up, find a good perch and wait for shots. Using it like a tank will get you killed early and often.

I don't hate lights as much as Donalson. You do get killed in them . . . a lot. Often without really damaging anything else. But on occasion, you end up finding a hole in the other teams lines and you can rampage on their arty, TD's and base campers. This is the fun part of the game to me. Another helpful strategy is to "team up" with TD's or heavies so that when you encounter and spot enemy tanks, there's some firepower there to kill them off before they kill you. You get cash and experience points when your teammates kill stuff you spotted.

Hope you are having fun.

Hate lights? Hope I didn't give that impression... Lights and meds are my bread and butter.... Won the 13 57 from that big tourney and 8 battles later she sits with an ace mastery... I've researched up to tier 6 in all the scout lines... Working for the 8 in all the lines...

But eatly in a tankers career scout MM sucks... As do most of the tier 4 sciuts ... Luchs being that one exception

Aww Yiss! I'll try it tonight. Thanks!

I've got an assortment of light tanks to tank destroyers. I found that even with my T1 with 600 HP I'm facing some big ass tanks with 1250+ HP (same issue I had playing the lower tiers).

It does take a different strategy between the light / nimble M3 & M3 (and Kraut tanks) and the heavier T1 and others. I like the challenge of taking that T82(?) with 160 HP and a 105mm Howitzer out working on some loooong shots.

ok i'm at my computer now so I can type better :)...

the campaigns as mentioned are a killer... literally people rush in and do stupid things trying to get them... at some point I was to a small extent... I've completed the first set and have my stug IV (which is a POS... but never sell a special/prem tank)... I really did them for the female crew (free brothers in arm + 1st perk complete starting into 2nd... 3rd if you count BIA)... the medium line you can do fairly well with only up to a tier6 but I got lucky with the arty one pulling it off with tier5/6 only, the heavy I used up to tier8 but most don't finish without a 9... the light missions are difficult... end of story... a tier 7 or 8 will make them much easier assuming you scout well... funny thing... the TD mission I finished almost exclusivly with my e-25 (no longer for sale)... however I haven't finished the last mission... I'm slowly working towards a tier8 TD to be able to pull that one off.... they are great for building up credits quickly... and even nicer in the 2nd series of them you get free xp in some of them... when a gun costs 60k xp like on my t-54 (tier9 med) any help you can get is awesome.

these days I enable the mission, then play... on occasion I'll hit tab to see what mission i'm working towards... for the monthly missions and such do pay a bit more attention but those only work once you get to tier4 as well.

as mentioned... camo net is HUGE... also it can be moved from one tank to another... same with binoculars... at tier2 I spent many games buying a set of 'nocs... between that and the camo net I really learned to abuse vision and camo mechanics... it's how you stay invisible while killing other people ;-) ...

as for light tanks... like I said i LOVE light tanks... however because of the MM and relative ineffectiveness of them until you know how to use them I don't recommend playing them until you've got a good base of other types of tanks... I had 5k battles before I really moved into the light tank game (outside of the required m5 grind in china and the t-50 for the t-34)... you need the knowledge of heavies to understand hangling... and how that effects armor... meds to understand flanking and abusing terrain for that sort of job, and TD's for abusing bush cover/camo... once you have those mastered scouting isn't too difficult... you should know how to counter the tanks you'll come across, you'll know how to abuse the terain and bushes, you'll also have a good idea of the typical travel patterns of tanks so you'll know where to scout...

that big tourney I played last week I played in the tier6 t37 exclusively all week long... the other guys switched between light, med and heavies depending on the map... but I was the dedicated scout player.

at this point I've got a little over 3k battles in lights, 3200 in meds, 1700 in heavies, 750 in TD and 200 in arty...

if ya want to check out some of my better games I've put some up on youtube here https://youtu.be/4HxS02hCk1g?list=PLbHFo02zE68sQTsvJ8X6Eqd_FIXMBmF22

my favs would be the t-44 game and some of the t71 scout games

and for where to go on maps based on what you are playing take a look at this guys series... great stuff. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuTii-cm-AgtJ3TRRS7gkqUqpaKKCGUUJ

in all the tanks there is a big difference from when you are bottom tier and top tier... that takes a while to learn/figure out.

t1 heavy is a decent little (big) tank... good strong turret so hull down (where you're peeking over a ridge so only the turret is showing) you can do some real nice work with it... but as is the case with most US heavy tanks it has very limited side armor so learning side scraping/angling is difficult which is why on the heavy side the kv1 is so highly regarded for noobs.

prem rounds are nice when the situation arises... but you do need to understand them... the APCR typically fly faster and have more pen at closer distances but after about 200m the extra pen starts dropping they also have less normilization (ap and apcr will "grab" the armor and make it so they go in a little "straighter" relative to how the armor is angled... ap has 5 and apcr 3 if I recall correctly)... HEAT has no normilization, if they hit tracks, spaced armor etc they won't do any dmg, if they hit slopes they will easily bounce... HE rounds explode when they hit something... you should be using HE on the "derp" guns outside of certain circumstances... also prem rounds cost a lot more credits so use them sparingly and in the right situations

Just wait until you get that 1 OH 5 on the M4 Sherman.....things can get a bit out of hand at that point. Smaller stuff gets one shot killed, and bigger stuff just gets scratched.
