Checking out an 02 sv650. 17K miles. When is the big service on these? What should have already been done? Anything special I should look for? A little difficult to find neutral the owner says, because the rod connected to the shifter is a little bent....does that sound right? Thanks for your help!

I can't imagine what you'd have to do to the case to result in a bent shift lever. Bring a fellow motorcyclist who cares nothing about the bike to get a honest opinion.

If it is the outside rod that connects to the shift lever it could be bent just by being knocked over. Nothing special to look for, they are pretty rock solid. They are pretty noisy engines so any ticking or such that sounds like the valves need adjusted is pretty normal. As long as it is running good and not knocking it should be good to go.

Mine has about 32,000 miles and they have been trouble-free as far as I know. Supposedly the rod can be bent roughly back into shape, but they will never "truly" be right again.

Here is a replacement part for just over $6, if you're talking about part #29.

I can't remember what the problem is with the engine on the 2nd generation but there was an article in Roadracing World in 2003 or 2004 that said the 1999-2002 were much more reliable in racing. They are great machines.
