I'm wanting to use the motor from a 99-02 R6 for another project, so I'm trying to find a complete bike that's either stunted out or crashed so I'll have all the bits.
I've read a bit about the 2nd gear issues these bikes seem to have. Anybody on here have direct (not interweb folklore) knowledge of this issue? I'd like to stay pre-03 because carbs seem more simple, but if I got a 03 and later, is the FI pretty simple to swap over if I have all the harness, ECU etc? How large is the ECU? I do have space constraints.

I was having the similar kind of requirement, I think Salvage bikes auction would be the best option.

I raced a 1999 R6 and then moved up to a 2003. I don't remember anyone having gearbox issues. the ECU is going to be small, Yamaha had packaging issues then as well.

2nd gear in all bike trans are weaker then anyother gear do to being next to nuetral and the ratio jump from 1st to 2nd is normaly higher then anyother in the box. If you treat them right you'll not have a problem. If you know your going to abusse the gear box have the dogs under cut by one of the many shop offering the service like Fast by Gast, Cone, APE etc.

I had a 99 yzf600r, not quite the same bike, but i had the 2nd gear issue. It would pop out of gear near redline in 2nd. this only started happening after many many drag strip passes and close to 50k miles. It annoyed me enough that I sold the bike. I had been thinking about getting something different anyway, but the 2nd gear issue sealed the deal.

All good info, thanks guys.

Off hand, do any of you know if the injected R6's can run with pod filters on the throttle bodies or do they have the secondary injectors in the airbox like some of the CBR's do? I'd like to not have to run that huge airbox. The motor is going in a sport quad for the dunes.

I ask because a potentially good deal came up on an '05 today.

I don't know much about the r6, but along with the r1, it is on the short list of bikes I want to try. I did have a similar 2nd gear issue on a Suzuki that I fixed. A new OEM gear was about $100 from Bike Bandit. The under cutting from APE was about the same or less, I don't remember. The actual repair was pretty painless especially if the engine is going to removed from the bike anyway.
