Mrs.Mini and I have been navigating the field for BT communicators. Neither one of us are very electronically savvy, and reading reviews of everything out there gets pretty confusing. I'm looking for something that mostly will be used for communicating with each other only, and fairly close proximity. What do they good folks here recommend?
we have the Sena SMH10 and they work great. or did, I think that I have a loose wire in the part that clamps to the helmet, but it is a 4 or 5 years old and only $35 to replace.
We can be out of line of site up to 1/2 mile or more and it works great. I get a little static feedback from my wifes, but I think that it is due to her mic placement close to a vent in her chin bar.
it works well with Bluetooth and phone calls or music, but I don't want either of those things when on my bike so I never use them.
The charge lasts well enough for a 8+ hour ride plus stops for lunch and dinner (we never remember to turn them off at restaurants.
Sena
I have a Cardo Scalarider that I use for phone integration mostly - but when I toured New England for 3 days this summer we used them for bike to bike.
I will say that it worked - and the vocals were clear for a pretty good distance but it's kindof quirky to use - especially if you also listen to music. Switching back and forth is a crapshoot at best. Volume is wildly different between modes so what you struggle to hear as music will blow the back of your head off as b2b comm. IT also has a unique charging adapter so you have yet another dongle to pack in your stuff.
It works, was cheap for two lightly used headsets on ebay... but I will shop harder for the next time I do a "buddy trip". Maybe there is no better answer - but I was not impressed.
I got a pair of Sena SMH10R for SWMBO and I. Quite happy with them. Good sound quality - though her Bell bullit is a far sight noisier than my Shoei. I've taken phone calls while riding without the person knowing.
I mostly use it for streaming GPS directions and it's terrific for that.
I had a set of Shark brand communicators, I believe they were under $100 for a pair. But, almost useless above 55mph due to wind noise.
Scott has a set as well and we could be 1/4 mile apart and still hear each other.
What I would like is ear buds to match a boom mike in the helmet.
Another friend has the SENA 10S and has been fairly happy with it overall, but uses it more for phone/gps signals.
Had a Scala, went to Sena. I like the Sena better - better sound in my ear, better sound from my voice, better connection to phone (old Scala didn't work well with smartphone).
I taught my wife Morse Code.
