How cheap can you get chinajunk scooters? And are they worth it for screwing around with and riding around campus?

I asked a friend (scooters are his shtick) about the chinajunk scooters (and there are now copycat dirtbikes and dualsports as well). his response was simply, "Where do you plan to buy parts for it?" Implying that there is no source for parts for most of them.

On the other hand, he said in many instances, they're a close enough copy to utilize parts from the japanese scooter they were modeled after. For things like electrical components, I remember he mentioned this.

I've started seeing 150cc GY6 based ones for about $800 new or nearly new on craigslist. Wouldn't trust one myself, but I admit that's a lot cheaper than most heavily used Japanese and Taiwanese ones go for. If the engine/CVT isn't full of shavings from the machining process, it can hold together while everything around it breaks.

There are several online dealers who sell parts. Although, as I understand, a lot of the things that break can be cobbled back together, or parts can be picked up from a scooter dealer if you can figure out the parts interchange.

Edit: I think Roketa may have just gone under, so you might be able to find one of those cheap at a dealer.

Honestly it is more something cheap and mechanical than I can drag into my dorm room and mess with then any practical purpose. I will have a big dorm room and I am tired of having nothing to just screw around with that isn't a school project. so I can do whatever the hell I want to do with it.

Does it have to be plated?

The cheapchinese pit bikes are a lot of fun, and mine has been 100% reliable.

In reply to zomby woof:

Yeah, come to think of it, are you in a state where sub-50cc bikes don't need to be plated? If so, you might luck into a Honda Elite 50 or Yamaha Jazz that need a bit of work for a few hundred.

I go to college in Alabama but I live in Kentucky. So I guess it is whatever Kentucky's laws are on that.

Where can I find Kentucky's laws on the plates needed? Or would I need to look at Alabama's laws since I will be in that state.

If you'll be in Alabama, thats likely the rules you'll want to follow. In case they require tags, but Kentucky doesn't, I doubt the police will be sympathetic if they pull you over.

96Dxcivic, in KY all you need on a 50cc is a flag, depending on where you are don't even need that. I'm in Louisville, and see kids riding BIG scooters (250's) on the side walk right in front of cops, nobody cares.

But if Alabama require tags and I am an out of state state resident can I get an Alabama tag? Do I even need them?
