There are two of these for sale near me at about $1000.

I've always liked the look of CB360s and am currently looking for a reliable, smaller displacement commuter. Key is reliable. I have a disassembled XS 650 being turned all cafe and I'm going to want something I won't have to worry about getting me to work all summer. I don't mind doing maintenance, but I don't want to be left stranded either.

What should i know about these bikes? Will they fit the bill as a decent commuter?

Yes. For $1000 you can do better though. If you're looking at a 360 but want a "smaller displacement commuter" stay off highways.

I just bought a running functional 1100cc Goldwing for $1000. Once relieved of baggage, it's just a normal bike with a goofy engine.

A 360 rattles the fillings at 50 mph.

Remember that back when they were new, a 350 Honda (or the 360 later on) was considered a medium sized motorcycle...people rode them on the highway all the time, even took long trips on them. I wouldn't have any problem using that bike for commuting.

I wouldn't argue for the 'Wing being a 'better' bike for $1000. It's a matter of taste. I'd rather have a 350/360, personally. Really, $1000 is just the baseline price for a decent, rideable bike these days.

I like Honda's mid-size twins. Dead simple, parts are easy to find, and there are millions of 'em out there. There are certainly better bikes by modern standards, but if you like old stuff and just want something to putt around on for cheap, these are a good choice.

Dan's right, though: they are a bit buzzy at certain revs. And as a 200# guy, I tended to avoid all but short hops on the interstate, too. For everything else, though, they're perfectly capable in modern traffic. Brakes are underwhelming (the discs aren't really any better than the drums), suspension is soft...

But they're easy to live with, easy to work on, and easy to like.
