I have a line on one with 17k miles that needs a couple small things for a whopping price of $900. What should I know? Looking for a beat around bike and something SWMBO can drop a dozen times and I won't cry.

It's a DR. With a starter, signals and mirrors. That's all I got. Should be great for what you want it for.
I have a '97 DR350SE. Fun, cheap, reliable dual sport. The 250 should be very easy on gas! I wouldn't want any less power than my 350 has for quick blasts on the Interstate, but the 250 should have adequate oomph for keeping up with traffic on two-laners and backroads. These are air-cooled, which means they are also oil-cooled. Lack of proper oil changes or even just periodic oil level checks plus overly-ham-fisted riding can eventually lead to a wiped cam journal, so change the oil! To check I think the procedure is idle for at least three minutes, shut it off for one minute, remove the dipstick, drop the dipstick back into the oil tank at the same angle, but don't thread it in, just measure the oil with the dipstick resting in place. On the outlet of the in-frame oil tank there is a mesh screen, which I would recommend cleaning or replacing on a used bike. It is inside the hose fitting coming out the front of the frame, right where the single big down tube splits into two tubes for the front of the cradle.
That one looks mostly stock except for the can. It seems common to find these with holes hacked in the airbox, springs clipped on the CV slides, mufflers cored, rejetted carbs, etc by previous owners. If well done, the above mods might give a wee boost in power, but I think it mostly just makes more noise and sucks down more gas.
