I am new to riding and I have a set of Fox Racing Armor for off road duty but am looking for an on road jacket. I am hoping to find something used. Anyone have an older but decent road jacket in L to XL that they might part with?

I can't help you with used, but if you're going with a sport bike, Joe Rocket, Icon, or AlpineStars would be good choices. I love my speed strength gloves though. There's pretty good prices on apparel if you look around a bit.

If you're rocking a cruiser, just get leathers like the rest of em.....chances are you won't need the armor.

Any leather outlets near you? Head to their cut out rack.

My neighbor has a black something, brandy new, never worn. I think he wants $75 for it. I'll try to see him tomorrow.

Probably true of most motorcycle forums, but I got most all of my ensemble used at ADVrider.com. Two jackets (summer and 3 season), never worn boots, overpants (also look never worn), all at 2/3 to half of the cost of new. The jackets show wear, but they're going to get worn anyway. Gloves are much harder; I find I have a weird shaped hand, so not much fits me well, so I buy those at the m/c shop. The times I have purchased new (summer pants) I've bought from these guys: Motorcycle Gear .com No problem with sending back and exchanging if it doesn't fit.

My 3 season jacket is probably due for replacement soon and I'll likely move to a hi-vis one. But, I can wait for the right used one to come along owning one already. Having to buy everything new would have made getting into riding (safely) cost prohibitive. Most guys take very good care of their stuff, so it's not tough to buy good equipment. Most of my stuff is First Gear and I'm pleased with it.

+1 for ADVRider, I've gotten stuff from craigslist and my local BMW Motorcycle shop does a riders fleamarket yearly. I got my cold weather jacket there for $50. original price for it was $550. Deals are out there.

Once you sift through "motorcycle jacket" from K-Mart adds, the real riding gear on CraigsList isn't too bad.

I've found the best way to shop gear on Craigslist is to search by brand names

Find a TourMaster / Cortec jacket as there nice multi layer units so they can be used 3 to 4 seasons.
Note some of the lower cost jackets like Joe Rocket might not have all the armor. A friends wife sent me his jacket after he sold his bike and it has elbow and shoulder pads but no spine protection.

I bought a used Ducati performance mesh jacket ($100)that has shoulder and elbow armor but none on the back or even any place to add some.

I just got some used Joe Rocket mesh pants that have hip and knee armor ($40 shipped). It have been a crappy summer - only wore them once.

ADV, Ducati.ms, Ducati.org, Ducati Monster site and craigs is the best. My wife got a smoking deal on a Rev It jacket off a ducati site earlier this summer.

I sprung for a Speed & Strength Seven Sins today in HiViz/black........its a very good jacket for its $149 msrp(the shop discounted me to $106 out the door though). Comes with Knox armor in it too(elbow, shoulder, and spine protectors)......I needed a proper riding jacket for going to the drag strip next week.

I got a First Gear hiviz that is slightly used off of ADVrider. 86 shipped. It is one of their cheaper jackets but I'm happy with it for sub 90 degree riding.

I pick up a used First Gear jacket from Craigslist two years ago for $40 seems to be holding up well.

I snagged a Tourmaster jacket new for $74 on sale at M&M Leather. NICE. Vents galore, liner, armor, reflective stripes, waterproof.... I'm happy as a lark.

Another good place to check is eBay. Sort for auctions only, and you'll find a lot of people selling good gear for better prices than the forums occasionally.

For new, Revzilla often has good closeout deals and are awesome to deal with. Atomic moto's bomber specials are pretty good usually too. I used Motorcycle Closeouts in the past, but their prices have gone up while the desirebility of their gear has gone down over the last couple years.

If you are generic or typical sized, than you can probably do mail order or online flea markets just fine. But, if you're the type that many clothes don't actually fit, I'd suggest trying things on first. Which means swap meets and shows and shops.

Even skipping the how it fits part, there have been many articles of motorcycle clothing I've been all in a lather over, only to find it lousy when actually trying it on. Tourmaster for example. Their three season multi-layered jackets are an exercise in wrestling with a chinese finger puzzle, especially if you're at all damp. No wonder they are always on sale so cheaply.

Swing by a couple of shops and try on gear by different companies. Make yourself a list of what size of each you like, because a Joe rocket XL will fit different than an ADV one.

Armed with that you can search evilbay with size and brand filters and save a lot of time. I also filter out new and concentrate on used myself because no one tries to resell junk and the quality stuff sells for pennies on the dollar used.
