I like sportsters, but that bike is the same thing as the malaise area Detroit pigs. Just because it is a sportster dosnt mean crap. Like bragging you have a camero. Is it a big block 1969? A new 2013 with 500+ hp? No. It's a 1978 with 190 hp.

Those rice burners must have been in a parking lot

I spanked my brother on his Road King and I was on a 450 Zuki.

Would I want to ride a Zuke to Montana and back? Everything has a purpose.

I agree, But a sportster is not the most comfortable thing around. Road King? really comfy

This seems correct

I'd be surprised if the 250 class of "learner bikes" couldn't beat the hell out of the 883 sporty's. I don't think we need mention the sub 400cc 2-stroke japanese offerings of the 80/90's

My 883 is significantly quicker than the 450 Honda I learned to ride on. At this point I have no desire to go 1200.

I would say, if you are interested, grab the bike -wheel and deal and get the best price you can. Put in some time and bring it back the way you do with any classic machine.

Of course, check it over if you have the background, if not bring a person that has and make sure you are getting a solid foundation to work from. It might not be the bike for you and it might be.

It is hard to judge from the picture. There is a very good reason there are still old Ironheads around, in that they are tough machines.

Check it out if you are interested.

I wanted to be nice and give the old Harleys a break. You're probably right about the 250s.

Oh, they can move. And, as my friend who built a dealership on them used to say "If you want to go fast, you need 4 cams." He drag raced Sportsters top fuel. They just don't run for very long.

Not to defend the HD's, But I doubt anything lives that long at that level of racing lol

That would be cool to run an old sporty hard and beat ducatis, it would be like the movie "any given sunday" where the guy races a bike then has to rebuild the engine and transmission after every race.
