Met up with some Omaha ADVRiders yesterday... bike was hard to start that morning, should have stayed home...

In their words:

Mike said: Here's what happened. Show this to Brian too. Today Saturday Nov 6, 2010, you were riding in a group of 4 - me (Mike, black Triumph Bonneville), Frank (Silver Honda ST1300), Randy (Platinum Honda GL1800 Gold Wing), you were last in the group. We were in Iowa about 55 miles north of Omaha headed westbound on County Road F-20 towards the town of Little Sioux. The road turns to the left (southwest) and there was a bunch of gravel on it. We think you got into the gravel and possibly locked up your front brake. The bike went down on the left side. It's in pretty good shape, the frame slider took most of the impact. Time was about 1300 hours. You whacked your head pretty hard, so we left your bike at a guy's house nearby and you rode on the back of Randy's Gold Wing to the Bellevue Medical Center. We got in touch with Brian and he came to the emergency room. Frank went back and got your bike with his trailer this evening. It's safe at his house in Omaha. He will get it down to you tomorrow Sunday, Nov 7 sometime after 11:00 am. Brian has his phone number. Lat/long of crash site N41 49.643 W96 00.401

Pictures to follow. Thank god I was AGATT.

Good job on the gear man. Hope all is well.

I was wearing Draggin' Jeans' Draggin' Liners under the jeans, and I'm 100% sure they saved my beautiful legs.

Other than a massive post-concussion headache, and some scrapes where the gloves burned through, I'm unbroken.

Any landing you can walk away from ....

Hindsight, what could you have done differently?

I can't remember anything about it. So...not land on my head?

Apparently there was gravel and I locked the front brake. Practicing that would have probably helped.

Damn front brakes...

Most effective at 2 things.

  1. Stopping you

  2. Flipping you

Wow, glad you are OK.

The front brake is truly your best friend. Modulation is the key! Most newer disc brakes will lock and slide the tire with 2 fingers, that's why I always use 1 unless it is a straight line panic stop.

Yup...glad youre allright. I have a bunch of friends who have their front brake lever cut down so that its hard to get 2 fingers on it. That way you really have to work hard to gorilla grip it. Apparently they say it helps avoid "holy berkely" stop attempts that typically occur just prior to a quick trip down a long hill

Does that increase the chances of using the lever to punch a hole in your hand should you drop it?

I will ask if any of them have ever dropped one of their hands before...

I didnt say its something I would do, I just said they do it. If one of them jumped off a bridge yaddah yaddah yaddah and so on and so forth and all of these things...

At least DNIF doesn't mean Do Not Ingest Food. Good to hear that you are doing better though.

Glad you're ok man, crashing sucks. I'm just happy all of mine, off and on road, have been relatively minor so far. I've only had the front brake get me once, sending me over the bars on some freshly cut single track back in August on a dual sport ride. Hit my knee somewhere pretty hard on the way down so that I couldn't grip the tank without pain and tweaked my left wrist bad enough that it hurt for two weeks afterwards.

I agree it isn't fun to make crashing synonymous with riding. I've done 2 minors and 1 biggie in 25k miles so it happens. Instead of making new motorcycle payments I get to make hospital payments so I feel your pain.

Hopefully all goes well and you get back up and riding just in time for the winter riding season!

SWMBOMOtT has suggested I probably learn to driving during the winter before riding in it. So I'm using this winter to repair and make some upgrades to the SV and it's new stablemate the XR.

good to hear you wernt terribly hurt. My dad did that with his girlfriend at the time on the back, except he ran over a piece of cardboard with his front tire as he squeezed the front brake = lockup and dump....

Glad to hear you're ok thanks to you being a responsible rider and wearing gear. You'd look a lot less if you'd slide on your face instead of your helmet.

Practice braking is never a bad idea. I try to find some clean parking lots I can do that on. I haven't in awhile. Might be time to teach my self the remedial course.

Again, glad you're ok.
