Is there any throwback vintage riding gear that won't sacrifice safety? Think googles and scarf type look.

I love the look of Davida helmets. As you suggested, though, you're paying for compromised safety. Goggles typically work best with open-faced helmets, but the chin is the most frequently hit region of the head (According to Proficient Motorcycling, I believe).
I've been thinking hard about an Aerostich Falstaff jacket. Waxed cotton, modern armor. Buy it a size down unless you want it to fit like a parka. 'Stich sells the goggles too I think, and the scarves (I have the competition size silk scarf, its great). Their elkskin gloves are pretty retro looking imo too.
British Motorcycling Gear (BMG) has some vintage duds too, I really like the Montana jacket. Doesn't get more authentic than the trialmaster coat either.
I'd personally still wear a modern full face helmet, just in a solid color, black grey or white. There are definitely some that are less swoopy looking than others, the Shoei RF1100 would be my choice but I have a Shoei head.
Boots are simple, you can still buy new Alpinestars HiPoint boots, now called Super Victory, from Metro Racing. They have some vintage (dirt) gear too.
Pants, not sure really. Maybe firstgear scout's? Technically not retro, but the design hasn't changed since the 80's. Otherwise, pick your favorite riding jeans.
There's a cafe' in NYC where old bikes come around every Sunday morning, they offer pre-owned leather and vintage stuff.
I have a 70's deerskin colored Bates jacket if you're interested. In high school I was 150 lbs. Now I'm too short for my ideal weight.

Metro Racing had all your gear. Looks vintage but with modern fabrics.
Don has some good package deals on pants and shirts saves you $$
