I have a 1996 KDX220 that has set for many years like 10-13 years. I did nothing to help with storing it as I thought I was going to keep riding the last time I parked it. I know what I need to do as far as the fuel system, but not sure if the coolant has messed up the motor. Has anyone else saved a watercooled dirtbike or non-dirtbike from such a long sit? Loved the bike and it has very few hours on it. Is it worth messing with or would I be better off just getting a used running bike?

Get it running, warm it up, then change the coolant. If it doesn't come out gross, then there is probably no damage. Once you get it in shape, and start riding it,keep an eye on the rubber hoses. They are the thing most likely to give you a problem, and it's not from lack of use, it's from plain old age.

At least most of the parts for your Kawasaki should still be available, I'm finding that I have to go to ebay for most of the parts on my early liquid cooled KTM.

My 85 Kx 125 sat for 10-12+ years. Gas was turned off. I drained the tank put fresh fuel in. Found the throttle to be stuck, unscrewed the slide gave it a squirt of wd40 screwed it back down, turned the gas on and went at it. Took a few but it fired. Oh yea, checked the air box for critters before kicking it. There where none.

Good luck.

Thought I would give an update on this.

I got the bike running awhile back, rode some and then took the big leap and went to FL Devils Creek Dual Sport ride during bike week, over 200 miles in 2 days. The old girl did not miss a beat. I am not getting the greatest MPG going to go to 45/50:1 and re-jet the carb, luckly my wife has a big tank on her XR250R and I brought a 8oz bottle to use to measure the oil that I had to use to transfer the gas. Devils Creek flicker albulm What a great time, we are hooked now. Going to 2016 Armenia Dual Sport in SC next.

Nice. The only thing I'd suggest is keep an eye on the transmission window if you see the oil getting higher and or milky its time for water pump shaft and seals no a hard job just takes a few hours.
