Whenever I see rubber door mats that are covered with the the little round stud or tips about 1/4 to 3/8 inch high I buy them for use on top of my work bench. They save the finish on the workbench top from scratches while moving parts around keeps tools in place and sockets from rolling off on the floor. They are great for catching little screws, washers or nuts when taking things apart. They will also catch oil or other fluids. If you have to use a hammer they protect the top of your workbench. When they get dirty you can wash them off with a hose a little soap and old broom. When they get really nasty you can just throw them away because they are fairly cheap.

Do you have a picture for the rubber mats that you are talking about? Sounds like something like this could be really awesome for kids who are trying to learn how to feed themselves too! Haha! But obviously with respect to using this in the garage too, it's a great suggestion and thanks for sharing the idea with us!
