I think the notches allow more torch clearance so more wrap per bead, and less start/stop.
It's lightweight, easy to cut and adapt, and wood doesn't scratch things up easily.
I try to get 3 good tacks about 120 degrees apart...
Of course don't catch it on fire!
Another way is to use a worm gear hose clamp with 3 windows cut out of the worm drive slots. Spot weld in each window, remove clamp and finish welding.

i would end up land-locking the clamp to my tubes. i suck at this game.

I use aluminum angle when I'm welding steel and steel angle when I'm welding aluminum.
That justifies keep scraps sound.
