After an "interesting" tow back from Roebling a few weeks ago, I'm now navigating the world of Trailer Insurance. In simple terms, the front 6' of roof disconnected and peeled back like a tin can in a nasty storm head wind. Insurance provider totaled it, and for a first offer, provided a reasonable number. I'm waiting on them to provide a "buy-back / salvage" number. Anyone ever buy-back a salvage trailer? I'm curious how they factor salvage value.
So now I need to decide if I'm going to give it to them (after I strip out the things I added to it) and replace it, or take the money and repair it. I insulated it, added electrical, epoxy floor, AC, etc. I sleep in it at the track.
Trailer is your typical 20 x 8.5 steel v-nose, about 10 years old. I haul a vintage Formula Ford, with the usual spares, tool box, etc. My guess is car + tools + spares is 2,000-2,500 lbs. An important note is I tow with a Diesel Cayenne. I'm not interested in buying another tow rig, or dailying an F350. Trailer is only used about 5-6 weekends a year.
I've started looking at new / used trailers. Not looking to spend new aluminum money.
The interesting stuff locally (Raleigh) seems to be 24'. I could get away with an 18', but don't want to go to 24' with the Cayenne. 20' is plenty of trailer even with a good WDH in terms of sway / movement. Little diesel does pretty well in terms of torque and fuel mileage.
Anyone in the Southeast have a trailer they are looking to sell? Nothing more than 20'.

Following this thread as I started my hunt this week too. So far the cheapest I've seen for a new 8.5x20 was around $7k....maybe $6k but can't remember. Used in that size are hard to come by...but 24ft seems fine a dozen.
Good luck with the search!
*meant to say that I am looking specifically in Georgia at new. Some Douglas, Byron, and Tifton, GA.
In reply to Hoppps :
Once you get an hr from Douglas, the used price of a trailer(asking price that is) seems to increase above new price, for that same trailer! Our 26' with 2 height increases (12" taller) was cheaper than any well built or cheap made used, that a stock FX4 150 would have fit in!
Yea, it was made super cheap, and as needed, repairs became upgrades, but it has done its job.

Let me know how your search goes. I'm not inherently opposed to a new. I have seen the same issue, that used 20x8.5s prices can be over new prices.
I have seen a couple of 24's that are outfitted perfectly, insulated, AC , etc. for reasonable money but thats just a bit too much trailer for the Cayenne.

Sure, now y'all come out of the woodwork with the deals. I have a doctorate degree in searching non-stop for weeks, the wife saying, just go buy something and get on with it, me following orders making a purchase, and then deals falling like rain from the sky immediately there after.
Both of these would have been solid candidates, and should sell very quickly in this market.
I ended up buying a slightly used 20' enclosed. Owned by a guy that bought it, spent lots of money on it, and used it just a couple of times. The new (used) one was spray foamed all the way around, nice canopy, 12 VDC popup thermostatically controlled vents, cameras, flood lights on 4 sides, under glow lights, solar etc. He was a retired I&C guy from the aerospace industry. It probably has (no joke) 20 different 12 volt circuits, all wired into a control panel with fuses. The wiring actually has proper Brady labels, first time I've ever seen that in a trailer :-)
Haven't actually used it yet, kid is a senior in high school this year and the misses has made it clear, that I will not miss any school events this year to go racing. Hoping to make the spring season with VDCA starting in February at RRR.
