Our annual search for the fastest track machine on four wheels, the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Grassroots Motorsports, often welcomes highly modified cars with big power adders, massive wings and super technical suspensions.

Benjamin Smolen, on the other hand, is taking a different approach with the Ford Mustang he’s entered:

  • Engine modifications? None.
  • Suspension modifications? Not a one.
  • Body or chassis modifications? You guessed it–no mods.

The reasoning behind this approach? “It’s well-rounded” Smolen succinctly explains.

Just how competitive is a light-on-mods S550 Mustang?

We’ll find out as Smolen and his steed take to NCM Motorsports Park, October 24-27, during the Ultimate Track Car Challenge, held in conjunction with the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals Powered by Hagerty.

A modern performance car like an S550 is capable enough that a good driver can make it competitive with some serious hardware that's not driven as well.

And I'm certain it'll photograph well, too, so that gets a point in my book.
