Mazda3 TCR Race Program: Not Gonna Happen

On October 1, 2019, Mazda promised to launch a TCR program at this year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend. The Mazda3 TCR, the release stated, would feature the brand’s “Kodo – Soul of Motion design language.” Even though TCR is a world-wide race program, this effort would be designed and built in the U.S.

And as the results show, that didn’t exactly materialize. No Mazda3 took the green flag at Daytona’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race. Then we heard that the program would make its debut for 2021.

On August 11, 2020, we received confirmation via Emily Taylor, Mazda USA’s Director, Communications & Experiential Marketing, that the Mazda3 TCR program isn’t going to happen at all:

Given the recent conditions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has elected to cancel the development program for the Mazda3 TCR car. We thank all our fans and partners for their continued support for Mazda Motorsports.”

That’s a bummer. That car was gorgeous.

I understand the reasoning, and don't blame Mazda for their decision. Won't try and pretend that I'm not disappointed, though.

Saw that car in person at the LA Auto Show last year. Absolutely beautiful. It's a shame that it won't ever make a racing grid outside of Gran Turismo (guessing they might throw it in the upcoming release).

Would have loved to see Mazda throw in a TCR contender. Some road bumps along the way and now COVID is the nail in the coffin. If anybody tracks their Mazda3, this would be cool inspiration to build it towards.

Couldn't have said it better.

Fenders and bumpers would be a tough tackle but would look rad with something other than the TCR wing.

That is sad.

Can we ask the artist behind that render how the wing was supposed to mount to the rear glass?

it was actually built in real life as well.

looks like the mounts are sticking through the rear window and the wing has to be removed to open the hatch
