Chocolate and peanut butter, bacon and eggs, Subaru and rally racing–some things are just meant to go together.

Fitting, then, that Subaru just announced it will compete in the 2024 American Rally Association (ARA) Championship with an all-new hopped-up version of the WRX.

The new rally machine–built by Vermont SportsCar–will make its debut at Minnesota’s Ojibwe Forests Rally August 24-25 and will be piloted by driver Brandon Semenuk and co-driver Keaton Williams.

"The release of the new car will bring an exciting future along with it,” said Semenuk, “This platform has been completely reengineered and the car looks and feels more dynamic, which will translate to an even better show for the fans! We will also have Travis coming back to the championship next season, which I'm looking forward to. Not only is it more fun having a teammate, but you learn so much more with a two-car team and this will be important for the ongoing development of the platform.”

Subaru also announced that Travis Pastrana will also be competing in the 2024 ARA championship in a second car, who had this to say of the new WRX rally car:

So excited about the 2024 ARA rally championship. The new Subaru platform is amazing and the chance to battle again with two-time and defending champion Brandon Semenuk is going to be so much fun. When Brandon joined the team, I was the veteran. But the tables have turned and I’m looking forward to learning a lot and hopefully getting back to the top. I’ve only been away from the sport for a year but a lot has changed and I’m ready for the new challenge.”

Those looking to learn more about the new WRX rally car are encouraged to keep an eye out on the Subaru YouTube channel for a six-episode miniseries that will offer “a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the 18-month process of designing, building, and testing the new car.” The first episode is expected to go live on August 9.

More specifically, the new rally car has been designed to compete in the ARA Open 4WD specifications and regulations. Power comes from a custom-built 2.0-liter boxer engine fitted with a mandated 33mm restrictor and 22 psi boost limit. A SADEV six-speed close-ratio transmission handles shifting duties.

In reply to 759NRNG :

The ARA is really strict about checking for working lights, turn signals, license plates etc. so I would say at least somewhat. Cars have to be registered and insured to enter a rally since the transits are all on public roads. Whether or not the EPA agrees is a totally different story.
