This Supercharged, Diesel Polo Is How Volkswagen Did Fuel Efficiency in the ´80s

We’ll forgive you if VW’s Öko-Polo doesn’t ring a bell. Instead of having a focus on performance or the ability to go off-road, this version of Polo was all about saving money at the pump.

Normally, the second-generation Polo could be had with a number of gasoline or diesel four-cylinder engines, but the Öko-Polo—German for “Eco-Polo”—was powered by a two-cylinder diesel engine that had some help from a G40 supercharger.

The result was a car that made around 40 horsepower, though is said to have been able to go 100 kilometers on just three liters of fuel, or roughly 78 mpg.

Fuel efficiency aside, the most notable part of the Öko-Polo may be its styling: a wide multi-color stripe goes down the length of each side, as well as a set of aerodynamically styled white wheels.

Can being fuel-efficient be just as cool as burning down a set of tires doing a burnout, or is smiles-per-gallon better than miles-per-gallon?

Dang, that thing is so rare in Germany that I don't ever recall seeing one in the flesh, both when I lived there and when I visited.

Probably not the most exciting find, but it should get "better than Prius" mpg.

Those tailllights look a LOT like Quantum, or maybe VW Fox.

Interesting that they have only one reverse light, and I assume one rear fog light.
