Rally Tires for our Rallycross Car

What's better than a SVT Focus? A SVT Focus on rally tires.

Fun fact: rally tires have very, very stiff sidewalls. It took two of us to mount each tire.

Our old wheels and tires are fine for street duty, but lack the grip or durability we needed for rallycross. We'll keep them to drive to events on.

They fit! Surprisingly, the giant tires don't rub at all.

Hmmm–looks like some mud flaps might be necessary.

Our last update ended with our 2003 Ford SVT Focus sitting on bare wheels from Team Dynamics Racing.

Now that we had found a set of 15-inch wheels that fit over our SVT’s brakes, it was time for tires. Maxxis offers tires for everything from bicycles to drift cars to trophy trucks, including gravel rally tires that should be perfect for our Focus. They sent us a set of Victra R19 tires in 195/65R15. This size is a tad larger than the Focus’s original tires, but should give us some more grip and some more ground clearance. Special thanks to the Auto Clinic of Ormond Beach, too. They’re always willing to lend a hand (and a tire machine).

Now to heal up so that you can test them on course!

I was going to ask why you wouldn't want to stay on street tires, but after driving a car with actual rally tires on it a few times this year, I answered my own question.

Yeah, rally tires are sort of awesome. After driving on them, it's tough to go back.

You'll need to log in to post.
