Just a thought exercise at this point. Actual work a year out, minimum. Asking for a friend.

I see fiberglass cloth (6 Oz, 50" wide) pricing from one supplier ranging from $30 for 3yds ($10/yd) to $625 for 110 yds ($5.68/yd). I don't see myself needing more than 20 yds for molds and parts, but I sure do like bulk discount pricing.

So, I guess the question is: anyone out there want to buy some fiberglass cloth described above at about $7/yd?

I'd be in for 5-10 yards

At the risk of sounding discouraging, but in the spirit of saving you a LOT of headache:

You're talking about spending $625 on fiberglass, plus all the logistics of distributing it, in order to save yourself $75.

We're all tempted by such things, but don't do it! :)

Challenge makes a man do irrational and stupid things to save a couple of dollars

Oh I missed that I was in the challenge section of the forum.  I don't normally stray in here.

I retract my statement.

Carry on.

I have bought from UScomposites, who have decent prices..  They are who I use for chip brush and Epoxy resin.

But for the LMP360 all my mat and cloth came from Amazon.

~$5/yd SHIPPED

6oz per sq-yd so ~ .6oz/sq-ft

For molds I would think you would want Chopped Strand Mat.. It's just so much easier to work with and cheaper for a given buildup.   Make sure you get a kind that the binder will disolve with your chosen resin.

This is 1.5 oz per SQ-FT or 14oz/yd.

Resin is ~2x the weight of fabric.  So if you need say 3 layers of CSM to make a mold your about 5oz of fabric per sq-ft and 10oz of resin.  resin is approximately 9 lbs per gallon, so for a sq-ft of 3 layer 1.5 oz CSM you would need ~1/10 of a gallon or 13 fl-oz of resin.   So your 10yd roll of 6oz cloth will need ~180 oz of resin, which at 144oz(weight)/gallon works out to about 1 gallon per 10 yards.  For 10yrs of CSM you would need almost 2.5 gallons of resin.

Resin is annoying.

For Epoxy US composites was my go to, but shipping kinda sucks so if you can find local resin (total boat may be an option for you) the cost per gallon might be worth it to pay a little more and not have to ship it.

For Polyester I found 1 gallon "Bondo" resin to be the cheapest.  I was able to buy it for ~$35/gallon.  It's gone up some to $47 / gallon locally but the savings buying from US composites ($43/gal) is quickly eroded with shipping as Poly/Vynil ester is Hazmat.

WHEN DOING FIBERGLASS/EPOXY WORK WEAR A RESPIRATOR ALWAYS FULL STOP.  LAYUP, SANDING, EVER STEP.  Epoxy is "Safe" but some people react to it and it can still be toxic so it's best to just respirator.
