My uncle gave me this truck.
It's a '96 Nissan D21 Hardbody, ext-cab, 5sp, 2wd.
Now that I have it all fixed, I've come to the conclusion it makes no sense to keep it. It only gets a little better mileage than my P71. The box is bigger than the trunk in my crown vic, but not enough to justify owning them both.
It wouldn't start. The alternator was dead. I put a lifetime-warranty NAPA reman in it. For safety sake, I also swapped out the little 34 series battery they come with for a 880cca 65 series one. Fit great. You bump the key, it MOVES.
The timing chain rattled at startup. I bought a made-in-japan kit, including gears, guides, seals, tensioner, and chain. Worst part about the job was having to remove the oil pan. The upshot is, a lot of the gaskets on this engine are now new too. It is now silent.
The transmission didn't have 5th gear and reverse was loud, the speedo and cruise did not work either. Apparently the transmission had been rebuilt, but the shop didn't stake down the retaining nut, so the whole thing clearanced itself. It took the end off the speed sensor as well. I found a low mileage transmission within about 200 miles away, and swapped it in. The clutch looked great so I left it.
I replaced the front shocks with KYB Monotube's. I bought some Monroe air shocks for the rear, but have not installed them yet.
The tires are around 60-70%.
The air conditioning works GREAT.
Here's what it looked like the day I got it. Of course it's much cleaner now, and the dumb toolbox is gone. The frame looks great btw.
Wish I was finacially and geographically able to buy this. I had a 90 hardbody for years, but sold it when I bought my Tundra. Tundra is long gone and I really miss my little Nissan.
Good luck with the sale. That price sounds like a bargain to any buyer
Ive been wanting a hard body for a long time

I'm not interested but someone's gonna ask how much.
Dan
sadly, i've spent within a couple hundred bucks what i'm asking at this point. once you factor in all the hoses, gaskets, odds and ends. you know how it goes.
Sweet dear little baby jesus, Im glad youre so far away...been looking for hardbody specimen I could trust for a while. Sadly, I haz the poor
Nebraska huh? Mr. Heath, you ready for a road-trip?
It has been a while since I've been to Ole's Big Game Cafe in Paxton!
listed it on a local board. had someone claiming they'll meet me with cash the moment i get off work.
we'll see...
Wonder how cheaply you can get to Nebraska from WV and back again...
on my way home i bought an '87 Ranger ext-cab 2.3 that needs a clutch,
for $100
Picts and build thread to follow.....
Did someone write a song about your truck?
You gave someone a bargain. Trucks like this are selling for $1500 in this area, but without all the work you put into yours. Unfortunately, when you want to do a job right, it's hard to stop at fixing just __. Then you wind up selling for a loss because a higher price won't sell.
Good luck with the Ranger.
I have basically the same vehicle in the 86 model year. I just cannot convince myself to sell it. You sold yours too cheap unless it has some rust issues.
a little rust, frame looked great. some dents, nothing terrible. it was a tricky combo of being really functional, yet tired looking and super high miles.
