When these(Atlas) first came out  I believe the General had a skunkwerks version that Robbie Unser drove at Pikes Peak.

Not sure of the hp/lbft, but there was mention of at least one snail being involved. Watching very closely as I'm having my third one of these put in my Bravada.....also there was a gentelman in either Calgary or BC that was flashing the ecm to provide upwards of 400hp with no other modifications.

I'll have to do some research about that. See if I can find anything. Thanks for sharing.

Here are my goals.

1. 500-550whp

2. Turbo 6 cylinder sounds

3. Look something like this

4. Big smokey burnouts.

5. Low 10 second quarter mile.

If it proves reliable

6. Take it on drag week in the Street Machine Eliminator class

Speaking as a former engine engineer, those rod holes for piston cooling make me nervous and skeptical of their effectiveness. If you are worried about spinning rod bearings, you could plug those holes for extra hydrodynamic pressure, at the expense of hotter pistons.

That's actually something I am curious about. Everyone always says to buy a 2006 and later engine because they have numerous improvements.  One such improvement is the piston oil squirter.

You can also see a notch in the rod that goes the whole way up the rod. I am wondering if the older rods are wider (and therefore stronger). Also, I would imagine the hole is not the best thing for strength. I tried to find a picture of a stock early rod, but can't seem to find anything. I may just have to inspect my early engine a little better, and see what the rods look like.

Regardless, the car will be getting the earlier engine on the first rendition. The mock/jig block just happened to be one of the later engines.

Here is a side profile of the rod.

I take back what I said about the notch.

It would be very interesting to compare an early rod to a later rod.

I'm not doing an endurance race, so a oil piston squirter is not really required.

I guess Drag Week is and Endurance race, but it's a quarter mile at a time.

Hm. They didn't come with a V6. I wonder if it was a swap or if the seller just doesn't know any better.

That would be the same body style as mine, just a 4 door.

I'm guessing it's a straight six.

Work continues. The engine has been in and out 4 times so far.

Another issue with these engines is the oil pan. It is a front sump, and it is very deep. The 4 and the 5 cylinder in the Colorado/Canyon however are rear sump pans. After a quick google search, I found a brand new 5 cylinder pan for $88. That's pretty hard to beat.

All we have to do is insert a cylinder.

The majority of the bolts line up, but some of them need to be extracted from the 6 cylinder pan.

The pan needed a notch to get around the rack and pinion.

It will be fun to get through oil pan and engine mounts, because then we get to start mounting the turbo and more fun stuff.

Yeah i’ll take one of those pans please.

In reply to Patrick :

I think there was a group of guys casting their own rear sump pans, but they wanted like $500 for the pan. This is a much more budget friendly option if you can weld aluminum.

Oil pan is about 80% finished. Need to do some finish welding and turbo drain.

It just wouldn't be custom without some diamond plate.

It fits in there pretty nicely.

It just barely fits under the hood. I'm going to have to get an aluminum valve cover from an '06 and later engine and relocate the oil fill.

Engine is mounted. We're inching closer to the fun stuff.

You may want to reinforce that turbo bracket. Looks like it will only hold on for a small amount of time, plus it may be touching the tire.

I'll give him a hug when I get home for reinforcement.

As far as tire clearance goes, I'm not sure how we are going to handle that.

Put him in the passenger seat?

Sounds like a reasonable solution. I think neither of us can wait for that.

Sure they did. It was a 0 degree V6

Man, that turbo bracket hasn't been on the standard Nelson weight loss plan yet. ;-)

Glad I clicked for the update in here! I had plans to swap an Atlas into my 87 Tbird, figured it was more attainable than a Barra. Went as far as purchasing one of the short run flywheels several years ago to hang a manual trans behind it. Ended up reselling that for what I had in it to fund some other projects that were actually progressing.

Looking forward to seeing where you go with the Atlas.
