Java and nohome:

Misery loves company,  right? I hope yall are this talkative and helpful as i go through the neon bodywork. Because i want the results y'all are getting. Nohomes finished car is amazing,  and java the travelall is looking better every picture.

I was recommended to use matrix products. As soon as im done with sanding the sandblasted metal, ill be shooting my first ever coat of epoxy primer.

The results on the two sections of the hood are a perfect example of where to stop sanding. Chances are this is thin enough that a high build would have taken care of most of it. You are chasing thousandths of an inch over an acre of tin.

I have exactly zero bodywork and paint experience, so I have no clue on the matrix products. For my first epoxy coat I walked into the paint store and asked for epoxy. Ended up with Omni MP170. Shot fine, got hard. So I guess OK? I was doing some googling during the shut down, and lots of the hot rod guys were talking about SPI, they drop ship to your door, perfect. Half their products are not able to be sold in CA, so probably good old school stuff.

In reply to NOHOME :

I was certainly not going to do another coat on that! Good to hear the high build will help there.

The doors are killing me, I probably have 4-5 hours sanding on the now.... So hard to tell if I am getting them straight ish or just wavy and smooth blush

And if anyone sees my 6" durablock let me know..... I probably spent half hour looking for it yesterday..... Its really handy on the rounded corners.... I need to get organized.....

Thanks! I hope to be where you are soon.

The 32' is a monster.  Bet the 6 and 18 are the faves.

Never heard of Matrix products , but chances are it is made by one of the other name brands

SPI is a cornerstone of the hot rod home- paint world. Cant go far wrong with their products. Most of the epoxy primer hot rods out there seem to use SPI.

I watched a ton of Eastwood Videos when doing the Molvo. I was not a total newbie since I had the Bugeye and a couple of previous half-assed paintjobs in my history. But the materials change so fast that if you don't do it for a year you have no idea what products to use. Case in point is the Eastwood profile polyester high-fill you can spray it on bare metal. Not available when I did the Molvo, so I had to cover the whole car in another layer of epoxy and use featherfill on top. No more featherfill for me... You can skip that second epoxy  step now and save $$$ and time.

I was looking at the Evercoat spray fillers. Has anyone used Slick Sand? 4-6 mil coat thickness vs the featherfill 2-3mil.

Evercoat makes this stuff that IS DTM. No experience but you can check YouTube for reviews.

Takes a large orifice in the spray gun to shoot this stuff.

I stuck with featherfill if for no other reason than it was made by the same company as the Rage Gold bodyfill I was using.

Looking really good.

Are you going to do epoxy one panel at a time or go for the whole thing in one go?

Whole thing at once. Thinking gray first? Thoughts?

Id say white first. Top to bottom limits overspray and drips in my mind

Top is also easier to mask I think. Drape one big piece of plastic over, tape off as needed.

So should I go over all the 80 grit sanded filler with 150? Make it look a bit better in epoxy?

I might go even 220 or so so you don't remove much filler and raise the metal high spots. This is where not doing a high fill is going to cost a bit in the finish department .

Shoot it and see, its only paint.

I would start at the top and work my way down. But I doubt it matters.

I guess we will see what I get done this weekend. Only have 150 on hand.

I like the not raising the high idea.... How much are 80 grit scratches going to show?

Tried dry guide coat. Way better than the spray paint.....but don't use too much to start!

Fender looks good. Spot putty the few low places and good to go. You don't want to take much if any more filler off the fender.

Really liking the dry guide coat. I put too much on, and it still gums up a little, but way easier for me to read.
