thanks man, that scirocco you had is like my ultimate dream vw, but after owning this car it will have to be quattro if I ever get my hands on one.

Arg! So sad I found this build just now and not months ago, I could have confused the heck out of you with all sorts of useless information. Do you have your throttle position sensor mounted yet? From my perspective, that was the hardest part of an MS install, you might get some ideas from our old builds:

I plan on using most of the automatic throttle linkage on my swap so I will probly incorporate the TPS into that bracket that comes off the head for a linkage pivot. . . there should be some linkage pics floating around this thread somewhere. . . but needless to say to you, an efi 10 valve is no picnic. I spent a couple weeks of my free time sorting out the fuel rail fabrication and mounting. it's moving along though, TPS will be one of the last things I still need to figure out on this one.

so much needed update time. . . I acquired some parts needed for the turbo engine, MC2 cam and crank thanks to a couple motorgeek members. I was in the process of getting everything ready to balance the bottom end, swapped my free pistons on to my original rods, went to install the ARP rod bolts and the first one fell straight into the bolt hole. . . . berk. I had no idea the 10VT is the only 5 cyl with 9mm rod bolts. oh well, the correct set has been ordered.

So obviously I am not going to make the 2013 challenge. . . i'm sad to finally have to admit this but I see no point in traveling 2/3 of the way across the country with the stock JT na 5 cylinder. . . this car runs great but it leaves plenty for the right foot to desire in its current state. I would rather keep it in Colorado and get the turbo set up running at full potential by the next challenge than show up with something stock or barely sorted last minute. . . . I have already told my wife I want the challenge to be our main focus as far as car events in 2014. . . it is quite a trek for us grand junctionites after all

other than that not too much has been going on with the car, I scored a set of factory audi 90 BBS meshies to run as my winter/challenge wheel. . . . but its going to be hard to remove the ESM's for winter. . . they just suit that car so well now

Just been cruising it around lately, she runs like a top as usuall, went from Blackhawk to GJ in 3 hrs flat today. . . . I think that is as much as i'll say about that

and as always, I like to close most updates with a good pic. . . this one being one of the best photos ever taken of my car, my friend Richard is quite an artist I must say. . . single exposure, light painted night time shot on lands end road at the base of the grand mesa

Dude. man up and bring it anyway. Enjoy competing against people, figure out where you might need to improve, get some ideas from other competitors and then come back next year with a faster car!

This. Many competitors don't have enough development time in the cars to be as effective as they can be. Last year's winner brought the car back for, what, the fourth time before he won? Plus, he spent many competition days at the drags or autocrossing in between.

i hear you guys loud and clear. . . but there are other reasons besides the state of the project that are holding me back this year. . . one bieng i just started a new job in July and i dont know how happy they would be if i asked for over a week off. . . 30 plus hour drive one way slightly knocks it out of the running for a long weekend trip. . . not to mention the money side of the whole thing. I just think it would be a better use of my time and budget to shoot for next year. not to say I wouldnt learn alot if i did go this year, but all that effort and distance traveled only to run a high 18 quarter mile??? I dont plan on winning this thing but bieng competitive has always been a part of the plan. . . i know im lame for not going but i will make up for it in 2014 i promise you all that much.

If Actual Life gets in the way, you can develop the car at your local autocross /drags. After all the work you put into the car (and the work yet to do), you're still under $2,013?

There's nothing that says that you can't find a cheap ticket to fly out and partake in the lunacy.

I do understand though, I've tried to go myself for several years, but being on the west coast it just is too difficult. Especially when I figure I'd rather spend that time and money to go racing locally and/or travel to races overseas to spectate, etc.

Sorry to see you're throwing in the towel, but being one that has actually made the commitment for long distance travel and competed I know it's not a simple weekend trip. I also bailed on this year's event. Want to buy a plane ticket and split a hotel room with me? We can both talk about how bad ass our cars WOULD have been if they were there. It's a great event to attend and Florida in November isn't so bad. As of last week, airfare was pretty cheap.

Yes the car is still under the budget cap in its current state minus wheels and tires. . . Once the turbo engine is installed i will need to sell some parts to get it back in there. . But it came with so many parts im confident i can still meet the budget cap. And if not i still would like to come out and run it as an exhibition. . . Being at this event is more important than winning to me. . . Just something I have wanted to do for awhile.

Good call on flying out. . . . As much fun as that sounds i just don't think its gonna happen this year

So I ran a 4ktq in the $2001 challenge I put a 5k turbo set up in it I think I still have all the info like wiring so it blends in perfect to your car. Pin outs on the computer etc everything I did. I was barely 20 years old but I did impress Tim O'Neil the rally champion enough that he had me build one for his driving school. I'll dig it out if your interested?

that's awesome. of course id love to here more about a fellow 4kt challenge effort. . . probly wont be necessary to find the pin out stuff as i'm going efi instead of cis but like I said id love to hear all about your project. . . I think someone mentioned you in this thread quite awhile back, always wanted to see more about the $2001 4ktq.

finally got the balancing done, things are finally moving along swiftly on this build for the first time all year

spent all afternoon fighting with keepers and stem seals, but everything else has gone so well I cant complain. the mains and rods plastigaged perfect, .002 & .003.

and even when I slid on the metal exhaust manifold gaskets from my kit they fit the "ABA port match" I did perfectly everything is coming together so well it feels like I called audi and ordered some awesome vintage turbo crate engine the tolorances are as tight as a brand new assembly. doesn't get much better

once I get the oil pump I can finish it up with the timing and what not. . . few more days.

Wow, I just got hit with a major flashback here! I remember your car from the '01 challenge and how much I was digging it! IIRC it was dark green right? I think we had a good chat during the drag session while everyone was wrenching away in the pits...

Good memories; and I totally needed some today...

End threadjack; back to enjoying this epic build thread.

not much new to post, got the oil pump on, cam and lifters in, been cleaning up some of the remaining hardware and misc. brackets, lines, etc with the new blast cabnet. I figure if my brother in-law is gonna zinc plate all of this stuff for me so cheap the least I can do is have it clean bare metal for him when I drop it off this time

what else. . . got the clutch and flywheel all cleaned up with the wire wheel, they were about as rusty as something can get but still in great shape underneath, hopefully that stock sachs will hold up for awhile . . . this thing is still a budget build whether people believe me or not.
id say 90% of my time so far has been spent in the parts washer. . . . scrubbing this greasy lump of coal into something car show worthy

What do the fuel rail brackets look like?

I picked up a secondhand 034 rail and it came with no brackets.

There are pictures of the fuel rail brackets on page 9 but as you will see I made my own mounting points on my cylinder head. I just never liked the way 034 or anyone else has done it so I came up with my own mounting solution
