finally got a water pump in the mail. -note to self, never ship an autozone part to the house- should have the timing all together today. only thing left would be the rear main and the oil pan (still on the car) and this thing is pretty much ready to fire up.. . too bad I don't have a test stand. forgot to say I tapped and installed the clt & iat sensors the other day, still need the 2.5 or better map sensor but that will go quick compared to building an entire board from start to finish. thanks to wes for the super cheap ms. . . . i'll try to post more engine pics this evening after I get it all buttoned up today
not much progress to report, got the K24 center section clocked in to its new 10v position, all the lines hooked up to make sure its right. got a few more odds and ends yellow zinc plated. I'm really digging the frosted look on all the billit pieces after blasting (in my home built cabnet) needless to say that trend will continue. I'm getting really anxious to get the 4k in the garage and strip that engine bay out. the clock is ticking on my June 1st deadline to have this thing running reliably, ready for vegas. and if I want the engine compartment to look anything close to my vision I will need all the time I can get. just waiting for this crazy cold snap to end. I know its winter in the high desert but dayum its cold this year
anyway, I ordered my intake plumbing bits today leaving a wideband as the only thing left un-purchased. the money is spent, the engine built. . . . just need to put everything in place.
so I forgot to mention I finally tracked down a set of bumper grills. they really do complete the front end, glad to have some again. in other news, im still plowing snow regularly this winter took a trip to Breckenridge with 3 of my best friends on Thursday. what an awesome day. had to go around vail pass, this picture was taken in Leadville. The wheel wells were so packed full of snow I could barely keep the car doing 40mph with my foot flat on the floor in 3rd gear so we tried to stop at a carwash which was closed, then proceded to jack it up and clear the wells with an ice scraper. good times! what was normally a 2 1/2-3hr drive turned into 5 1/2 hrs in that storm. totally worth it. the riding was amazing and I couldn't ask for a better group of guys to share the day with. The Quattro did excellent as usuall in the snow, I did however finally go order some winter tires for my 14's. Clearing the wells 3 times was enough motivation for that. though im sure we wont see another storm like that one again this season, there is always next year
Colorado love! just read through your entire thread. great car, great build! been a fan of the 4k for years.
saw this one on CL the other day. whatcha think?
seems like a good deal to me, 2 cars for the price of one!
so I finally have some real progress to report. I try to tell friends of mine but they never listen. . . out the bottom for the win. works on almost everything. out the bottom people!! sure I happen to own a very heavy duty transmission jack, but with or without that im still a firm believer in this strategy
that's all for now
stayin busy. not that easy while working 70hr weeks.
always with the before and after
(not pictured) hood safety latch relocate, AC delete, trans scrub, etcetera
Got all the metal work and body work done last week, primer laid down yesterday, hoping to get the red on tonight. What good is easter without a little car time?
Oh and I managed to get the battery tray all ready for the trunk as well as the brake booster blasted and painted while the primer dried.
finished spraying about 10pm Wednesday night. I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. this was a big paint project for me, I'm definitely a newb but I still think it came out great. and now, pics for proof of hood rich garage job paint action!
This really is an epic project. Thanks for keeping up with the updates, I love to see them.
Glad people are still following along. The goal is to have it ready to make the 7hr trek to vegas for the wuste euro show in early june. Failure is not an option
Nice! Are you doing all of your own blasting?
Yessir. In fact I'm doing all my own everything on this project. Including all the paint work this time around.
2 of the 3 passenger side motor mount allen bolts stripped out, one with a freshly welded/broken allen socket still inside
after all that I finally decide to dig out the 5k mounts already knowing the driver side is different than the 4k. . . .
an exact match. glad I don't have to mess with those 2 bolts anymore, just wish I would have checked sooner
forgot to add the handy work on the top bolt. all three stripped out, then this one just rounded out when I tried the perfect size easy out, so I sliced the head about 2/3 thru. once cut it was finger tight

Did you make a DIY soda or sand blaster for that? I've been contemplating building one to strip my entire engine bay
I didn't blast the engine bay but I did build my own blast cabinet this year and it has seen plenty of use already. I borrowed a set of plans for a build it yourself skat cabinet, then bought a few pieces from tp tools. Turned out great for a wood cabinet that only cost me a couple hundred dollers.
DIY blast cabinet
Been cleaning parts till 2-3 am everyday this week... sometimes I wonder why I clean areas that no one will ever see. OCD I guess
Hey just skimmed through the thread, looks pretty sweet. I picked up an 87' 4000cs Quattro in december with 300k+ and shes going strong still with the exception of some difficulty starting her when shes been sitting for a while. Been contemplating a rebuild so i can feel safe turbocharging her but leaning more twoards a swap. Any tips or suggestions? Any newer audi engines that would swap neatly in? Not too experienced in the field myself but pretty mechanically inclined with alot of time on my hands. Super sick build though.2 thumbs up!
pushing as hard as I can to get this car to vegas. still have a lot to do. 6 days before we leave. luckily im off work 5 of those 6 days. here we are at 4:45 Friday morning.
I have no life but work-sleep-car the last few months. I use the term sleep loosly
definitely is looking good.
Keep the updates coming. I cant wait to see it in all its newfound glory.
@newontheblock my suggestion if you are going to pull the engine anyway, just swap in what you want the first time around. It's is hard enough to pull these engines that you won't wanna do it twice. 20vt is probly the best bang for your buck and still an easy swap compared to the v8 and modern 5cyl swaps people are doing now. 10vt is basically bolt in but less potential than the 20v. It basicly comes down to what you want and how much time and money your willing to put in.
@mike924 thanks man! There are a lot of little mods and details with this swap I plan on covering in future posts, just no time right now. I absolutely love 924/944/968 porsches btw. . . Someday I will find a 968 in need of some help
That engine bay is so clean. I admire your planning and attention to detail, as well as your dedication to getting the car ready for Vegas.
This is such a cool build.
Car looks great! PM me and I'll give you my number in case you break down in/near Cedar City again!
