@de80q I actually won a forge motorsport gift certificate at a car show called dubs along the rockies. since I don't own a 1.8t there wasn't much in the forge catalog for me other than a couple of silicon elbow adapters and that unos manual boost controller so I ended up with those three items. not sure how those items would work on a challenge rules budget but I don't think i'll ever meet that cap at this point in the project anyway. that being said, I am still building this car with the grc spirit and doing whatever I can to improve the car with little investment. here is another example been thinking about my lack of radiator shrouding for awhile, finally decide to tackle it and I only spent a few hours total. way easier and simpler than the factory cardboard piece leads you to believe. glad I finally did this. i'll be making a lower piece soon as well.

Finally made it out to the dragstrip for some test & tune

that's about it for now. making the big push for wustevegas again this year. should be some nice pics coming from that and we are planning a night at the strip so I'll be interested to see what it will run at a lower elevation. as always, more updates coming. this thread wont be dying anytime soon

preparing for vegas this year has been so much more relaxing. been doing simple day projects like fixing the map pocket on the drivers side door. . . got all the gauges working, ive had no speedo/odo or lights in the main cluster for some time but its all working now. did a deep shampoo job on the carpet. its been nice getting all the detail work finished for once This crowd in vegas is a mix bag but the majority wont even notice the work invested into this one and I doubt many will recognize the rarity of this car and the cool options it has but I really don't care.
I set out to build what I feel the '87 4000cs could have/should have been from the factory and its finally getting very close to what my minds eye pictured all those years ago. that's what I try to bring to this show every year. imagine how cool it would have been to order a 4dr urquattro the last year they built the B2 chassis

wustevegas this year was the best anyone could ask for. its been a month and im still kinda floating on how great it was. no breakdowns (or tickets) on the drive in, nice little caravan of 6 local vw's and audis, two of which are boosted megasquirt powered and one 16v gti was just converted to digi so its surprising we didn't have issues of any kind. once we had the standard in&out dinner Thursday night we went to check in and slowly discovered I made the reservation starting Friday night and the hotel was full. we made the best of it and stayed up all night. ended up filming the sunrise and got some pretty good shots

we skipped the red rock cruise so we could check in early and sleep. our featured parking spot was lucky #77 and I don't recall walking out of the casino once all weekend with less money than we had going in.

Saturday before the show we all gathered and went to the car museum at the linq.

how cool it was getting to see #44 from the trans am series in 89. quattro re-wrote the rule book the season after this car showed up. best part is, Its 10 valve turbo!

not sure on the details but I cant imagine there being any other 10vt efforts from audi after this car since they went to v8 and 20v cars for the switch to IMSA. this to me is the last monster 10v 5cyl turbo ever built by audi. maybe im wrong. someone learn me.

so after years of complaining about bringing the oldest audi to this show a sport quattro drops my jaw. I really don't care that its a replica. the amount of work it takes to build any S1 variant has all of my respect. a very well sorted build by 2bennett and the cars owner.

shortly after staring at shorty the awards ceremony was starting. I know it was all the work of a close friend but I was still very flattered and honored to receive a top 5 audi trophy. this car has come along way in 4 short years and a big part of my progress is thanks to the motivation this show gives me.

sunday was good. did the mt charlston drive for the first time since 2012 when the car was basically all stock. it was fun to have more power this time

A little convincing and I had a few others up for the loooong drive home thru zion national park

and of course we stopped for our traditional sunset pic on the way home

just when we think about skipping this year its the best one we have ever attended. what a year.

@jerry from la we kinda wanted to hang out up top in the cooler temps but because it was a poker run this year we were encouraged to head back down for our last card.

been having trouble ever since we arrived in vegas with this car not wanting to run worth a crap at low rpm when its really hot out. if i'm more than half throttle or on boost it runs just fine. when its cool out its fine. but above 90 degrees and under 2000rpm it does not like it. I am confident I have fixed the couple vacuum issues I had but there could be another one that only shows itself in the heat. I have seen intake air temps as high as 180 which seems excessive since the coolant temp rarely goes higher than that. I may try moving my iat sensor as some have commented they get heat soaked in the intake of a 10vt.

whatever the problem I hope I find it in 2 weeks as I plan to race at bandimere for bug in this year

Yes, I had similar issues when the IAT would get heat soaked. Mine actually got hot enough to desolder the thermister from the sensor.

I moved it to the charge pipe just before the TB. It made a huge difference.

I'm glad to see you still driving it though. Mine has basically been pulled off the road after the Carlisle show for running and suspension issues. I'm going to upgrade to MS3X to hopefully iliminate some of the running issues. Any tips?

The video you shot really makes me miss my old 'rado. Maybe that will be the next project car for me.

wow! its funny you say that because i have had images in my head of pulling out a melted/deformed sensor. pretty wild it de-soldiered. im going to move that very soon then.

as far as ms3x tips, id say just spend the money as you already plan to do for the expansion. mine runs and tunes great without but the extra steps it took me to get it all communicating combined with the fact that I will be getting the expansion pack when I go coil on plug anyway. . . . I should have just got it the first time.

Moved the IAT sensor to the charge pipe in front of the throttle body. What a difference that made on these hot summer days. One more lesson learned and the car behaves much better in the traffic heat. Should be running good enough to go racing next weekend in denver. Can't wait

Not a bad 1/4 mile time at 4800 ft, what should those 10vt's run stock at the 1/4? As far as MS3x it is way easier to connect to it with the usb connection instead of the stupid serial connection.

I couldn't use the USB on mine, never could get communication. ended up getting a serial to USB cable.

@pwndbymustang not sure on the stock 1/4 mile numbers but Jared (angrytaco) was ripping off low 13s on CIS and stock size tires up in Spokane with his 10vt 4kq.

Its amazing the difference moving that sensor makes!

As for AngryTaco's times, that was running an extremely ported head, k24 turbo, BenSwann 2.2+ bar chip, modified CIS. He was pushing quite a bit more power than the Stock setup.

Right. . . I couldn't remember how stock he was at the time but that sounds familiar. Was he running the ng/nf head? probably the weakest link in my setup is the 2.1 cylinder head

He was running an MC head with oversized exhaust valves. It had been heavily ported and polished. I'm not sure if he was running "the can" at that point either.

Bug in at bandimere was another great event to remember. First off, my best friend Weston finally took his watercooled super beetle on a true to us shakedown run. the road from Grand Junction to Denver can be hard on a vehicle. and both of these boosted megasquirt powered cars proved they were up to the challenge both there and back.

I knew immediately I didn't have a chance in the car show portion. . . they grouped Audi and Porsche in the same class and I was parked in between a speedster convertible replica and a fully restored early 911. . .

coincidentally the 2 cars that won first and second in the class. there was hope however in the watercooled drag racing brackets since my car is still relatively slow, its easier to run consistent. Dialed in with a 15.2 I left it the same all day only breaking out once with a 15.14, luckily the other guy broke out worse and I stayed alive.

The watercooled class kept getting smaller and smaller as I hammered on the B2 with everything it had. round after round I managed to eek out the competition with quick reaction times and a great running car.

the intake temps were running a little high but I just left the hood up all day when not making a pass and thanks to a world class facility at bandimere, I was able to just coast down the gentle grade in the staging area. leaving the engine off and cool as long as possible.

final round. . . no one left but my little grassroots built 10 valve turbo vs. a vanoagon syncro (pictured above) with a subaru svx 6cly swap. His dial in was a 17.7 so I knew if I beat him at the tree it should be mine to win. left the light quick, tried to grab second a little too quick and missed it completely didn't even grind it, just let the clutch out way to fast and lost a good second trying to get 'er in gear after that I just couldn't make up the distance and ended up with a second place trophy.

no complaints! what a day. I think my nerves got the best of me on the missed shift. unfortunate since that run was my best light of that day at .003 rt there is always next year. not bad for a first timer both at this event and the track itself. the car ran great. it was the hardest its ever been run lap after lap (not to mention the 4 hr drive too denver and back that weekend) it was also the highest the car has been run hard at 5800ft elevation. can't wait to go back next year!

for the drive home I showed wes a little known back route called cottonwood pass. with tight cornered sections of pavement scattered thru a dirt road, its got just the right amount of technical fast sections to have fun on, and very little traffic on a weekday. prefect way to end an awesome motorsports weekend!

That is awesome! I'm glad to hear its running so well. Looks like a lot of fun. Wish we had more events around here like that.

As for the engine bay heat, add a manual switch for the rad fan. That will help get the temps down, and keep them down after you turn off the engine. I may have to do this on mine as well.

I might try using megasquirt to control the fan but I may have to do something different if I want after run options. also I'd like to get a bigger oil cooler and put a small fan on it. its just to small. . . like my intercooler.

I took a quick look through, and didn't see any pics of your oil cooler, or Intercooler. What are you running? I have a factory oil cooler, and it works great. My intercooler is fairly large, but only about half of it gets good air through the bumper. My temps normally stay around 10°f of ambient temperature. I'm seriously looking into putting a timer on my fan. That would allow the fan to fun for "x" time after the car is turned off.

My 924 and 944 both run the fan after the ignition is turned off. It is pretty simple as it is controlled by a thermoswitch in the radiator which is connected to a relay that drives one of the fans with a resistor in the circuit to slow the fan slightly and reduce battery drain. Sometimes the simplest solution is still the best.

Great time it looks like. Looks like the car ran really well also.

TurboSweede is right on the button with the thermoswitch. I run my 924 with the stock rad and fan on the track. Redline on the engine and normally 30+ Celcius weather (80+ Far). The car never overheats and I just turn the key off and walk away after a 30 minute track session.

Keep the build info coming. Great work.

thanks guys. sometimes I wonder if people are still following along since the page numbers are getting up there. glad this thing is still interesting more people than just me.

DE80q: they are in here, but both are so small its no wonder you missed them. hahaha the oil cooler (page 13) sits behind the front bumper on the passenger side, its about the same size as the factory 5k piece. the intercooler is mounted behind the grill and is about the size of a heater core. it can be seen hiding here

turboswede & Mike924: good point on the thermoswitch/relay setup. I've been running my Datsun like that for a few years now and its proven to work well. plus its got a potentiometer for easy temp adjustment. probably should just do the same on this car.

Sky Render: that's how it starts. then you begin to realize its in the running for coolest 4dr of all time! and after finding out my full trim '87 (heaviest B2) is lighter than a galant vr4 that's got to put it in the running for lightest awd sedan. probably still heavier than some of the old subarus I bet
