In reply to de80q: no my pump runs pretty much non-stop. I wasn't even aware of that setting honestly

all the bad fuel pump experience I have had leads me to think its your pump itself if this is a new problem. but if you just changed that setting and it started acting screwy id lean the other way.

our little Ouray gathering of euros was a great success. the long road down was my favorite part. I also finally reached a bit of a milestone I set for this project long ago, finally setting the boost needle on 15lbs consistently without any breakage or issues. Just break-neck torque and cracked smiles all around I think it's safe to say my grassroots top end rebuild is proving that you don't always need an expensive machining bill if you have an understanding of what is needed along with the time and patience to make it happen. anyway, pics

video coming soon

It's a problem that has recently developed, but I have had my total sign that the fuel pump itself is bad. It wouldn't turn on, then when it did, it turned back off about 10 miles away doing 80mph on the highway... Go figure. 044 pump in route.

The decel fuel cut is awesome for fuel economy. I gained nearly 5mpg after setting it up for it. Would be a good thing for you to check out with all these cruises you go on.

I'm very jealous of the scenery you get to drive through. Most of what I have around me are city streets, or farm lands, not exactly the best picture options.

Congrats on hitting 15psi! I remember running 14psi with mine, lots of fun, and will put you in your seat. I'm hoping after the MS3X, and HY35 upgrades, I'll be pushing much more than the 10psi I am now.

How do your iat's look running 15psi? Mine were showing lower temps than I am now at 10psi with the same K24.

I haven't checked IAT's at that psi yet. it seems to decrease as boost increases to a certain point of heat soak. Like on a long pull down the interstate. Then it usually climbs back up a little thanks to my tiny intercooler. I will look next time and let you know.

As for the scenery, I try to tell car people we have a tail of the Dragon in every direction out west. I don't mean to gloat, I just think more people should explore these roads. Not like I want them more crowded. But if someone considers themselves a car person, then insist's on taking the freeways and interstates everywhere that's just crazy to me

I try to appreciate how lucky I am to live here by driving as much as possible. This 2 yr old paint has more patina than magnus and his 277 car. Wanna compare fender flare rock chips? Haha

Anyway, I'm currently unemployed again thanks to the bakerhughes/Halliburton takeover. We all knew it was coming and I'm really not sad about it. Gives me more time to iron out the details on this car. I spent the last 4 or 5 days fixing the differential in my Datsun and building a fuel rail for it. Felt good to get some long overdue projects done around here. End rant. More updates coming.

In reply to MrJoshua:

its basically an exhibition at this point with what it cost me to rebuild the bottom end among other things, and with the recent lay off there is not much chance I will make it out this year. . . . maybe if I cash out my 401k I could pull it off! hahahaha (laughs while seriously considering it )

maybe the admins could change the title to challenge exhibition. I have tried to change it myself but cant edit the title of the thread

What blow off valve are you running? I like the sound yours has. Mine is just a very loud woosh of air when the giant valve opens.

In reply to de80q: I have the HKS ss and I don't really like the flutter that it does. Some say it gets better with more boost.

Update time. Got a few things done, to busy chasing down fuel leaks to post about it but I think I finally got them all.

First I put in the subframe bushings machined by our friend de80q. Very nice fit. And a bargain compared to 034 price.

While I was in there, I seam welded the front control arms, put my sway bar back on with new bushings, then modified the 4k snub mount so it would fit again with the turbo and crank trigger bracket

And a week later I had it back in the garage for more. Added some steel helper spring bushings that a friend made for me.

Finally got around to installing the helpers in the rear

Ditched the fuel pump damper and simplified the fuel pump plumbing. Then spent another afternoon fixing little things like my gauge lights (again) dome light, interior issues, etcetera. Then raised it up about an inch and put the stock 14s on for winter. Loveland and abasin opened yesterday so I better get that snowboard rack mounted up soon too.

I'm glad they fit well. That was the first set of those I had made, but certainly not the last. Now I make a couple different things to put onto these old Audi's.

As for the BOV, I actually like the sound of the HKS. The TurboXS I have is extremely loud. With a little research, turns out it's part of the RFL line. RFL stand for "really F'n loud", so it makes sense.

We're you having spring chatter problems? I have been wondering if I should look into helpers for my setup. I haven't installed my coilover get, because I want to install the BBSE's I make and run UrQ large bore struts up front first.

In reply to de80q: My springs would pop on the hat when I flexed pulling into my driveway so the helpers were a nice improvement there. No problems otherwise.

I tried to find a softer spring for the hks but I don't think they exist. I've been told the chatter goes away above 15lbs so I guess I'll just keep cranking the boost

I remember hearing the the ssqv sounds much better as you get around 18psi. I'm almost afraid to hear mine at those levels. When I was at 15psi, it sounds enough like a gun shot that people would hit the ground when I shifted!

After wasting 2 days trying to get the brand new 034 EGT package working together with no success, I ordered a VDO setup from jegs and had it up and running less than 48 hours after ordering it. It was cheaper and quicker to order a new one and completely install it (including re-tapping the downpipe and all new wiring) than it was trying to figure out why a sender and gauge from the same parts house would not work together. I just can't buy anymore of the marked up parts that 034 sells and won't even take the time to repackage it like it's their own. The EGT gauge came from an aviation parts supplier in Georgia and the probe came from california. No wonder it won't work together. Pretty sure the gauge isn't compatible with a k type sender but that didn't stop them from selling it to me with no instructions or schematics. Lol I don't think I'll bother returning it since it sat on my shelf for a year before I tried install it. But it would be funny to send it back with a note asking exactly how it's supposed to work

Unfortunately 034 has really gone down hill. They really don't seem to care about quality any more. I had thought about installing an egt monitor, what made you decide to put one in?

In reply to de80q: I've been told that it's a valuable tool for tuning ignition with high boost. Like you can add timing and you will see egt's drop to a certain point, then if you keep adding timing they will start to climb again. I haven't had the chance to test this, but I will soon. Also I had an empty spot in my gauge pod I added to the center of the dash and that seemed like a good thing to have since these manifolds like to crack.

I'm soo close to finishing my checklist on this car. . . Only 2 things remain at the moment. Still need to figure out why my power mirrors stopped working (pretty sure I already know) and I need to install my new oil temp sender which should be here any day now.

Beyond that it's mostly cosmetic like new sunroof seal, recover the drivers seat, etc.

Still checking things off the very short list. Got the oil temp working, power mirrors are both moving again, got both differential lockers hooked up and locking.

All gauge lights are working and red and I finished out the day today fixing my drivers side seat heater. Turned out to be a broken wire at the soldier on the heating pad.

Here is the best writeup I could find on the older Recaro heated seats like mine.
http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/seat.html Might not have tackled this easy job if it weren't for the link above. All that is left on my short list now is to make the horn work. It worked with the stock wheel but not after switching to the A4 steering wheel. I don't believe everything has worked at the same time on this car since shortly after bringing it home nearly 4 years ago. Feels good to have it almost as good as it was when it left germany in 87

In reply to Jerry From LA: I agree. Always felt that audi sold it short when they decided to call it the commemorative sport. I know it was the late 80's and times were strange for horsepower vs emissions but that title deserves more if that's what it really stands for that CS badge should have entitled the car to 100 more horsepower and some wide shoulders at least these days they would never get away with selling an RS5 that was virtually identical to the A5 but that's exactly what they did when my car sat next to all the other 4000's on the lot.

In reply to de80q: That's interesting. . . Mine are wired in series so if one goes bad or looses connection the whole thing goes dead. You should be able to check resistance on yours the same way I did once you know what wires go where. both showed 1.3 ohms once fixed.

still having a difficult time figuring out how to set up my barometric correction. spent a good part of the day above 9000 ft trying to zero in on something the car liked but I just didn't make much progress. its a little better but still way lean up there no matter what I do with the baro correction table.
not much else to update. put the roof rack back on. that's about it. it runs great at my usual 4600ft mark but if I go up even a couple thousand feet, (something I do quite often) it starts acting up. I'm starting to think that the single sensor taking one reading on startup is not cutting it on my setup. I may add a second map for more realtime adjustment. one 3hr trip thru the I70 corridor of Colorado has you anywhere from 4000-10,000+ and I usually don't even stop to take a leak so whatever my ecu reads when I leave is what I get on top of vail pass?? that's just not working for me. maybe I'm over thinking it but I think the second sensor would be worth it on this car.

Isn't that what ego correction is for? I doubt I'll ever see that kind of elevation change in one drive, so I don't know for sure if it would work across that kind of range.

Spent the last few days in Denver visiting friends, after a little fine tuning we decided to finally get this car on an AWD dyno. $75 for three pulls seemed like a good deal so we went down to Bluewater performance to see what she's got. This is uncorrected all wheel

Not bad at all. Some base numbers to compare Stock '85 KH put out 140hp and 150tq. . . . At the flywheel.

MC1 was 158hp and 177tq at the flywheel.

Just shy of 200 doesn't seem like a lot these days but I'm quite happy with the results. I built this motor with leftover parts, nickels and dimes. Spent a little money on balancing and boring. Otherwise it was all done in my garage. Cheapest, fastest car I have ever owned.
