Remember that serpentine belt thing?
Yep, chucked itself off this morning when I started it. Oh well. I'll get to it in Thursday!
It also decided to not run after that. Which is weird because an engine should run fine without the accessories. More to figure out!
In reply to wvumtnbkr :
I missed the start up and drive while on our trip. Congrats.
I'm a moron.
Fixed the serpentine belt. Just needed a smaller spacer behind the idler pulley. All fixed.
I also found the source of why it ran rough when it threw the belt. The map sensor came out of the intake. I made a small hold down bracket for it. Good stuff.
I then went to adjust the shifter a bit. It fought me for 2 hours. Then, I decided to take the shifter turret apart.... big mistake. In order to put the shifter turret mechanism back, you need to take the tail housing off and put them on at the same time. In order to do that, I need to drop the exhaust. Wtf did I just get myself into.
E36 M3.
Okay. Got to work on this a bit last night.
It took me about 1.5 hours to get the tailshaft off the Trans and the shifter block reinstalled. Not too bad!
Next steps:
Tighten the ppf to Trans bolts
fill the Trans with the fluid I took out
Reattach exhaust
Reattach lower subframe connector
Install shifter from racecar into this car (this one is cheap Chinesium that is suspect).
Bleed clutch again
Install bumpsteer kit
Alignment
Replace clock spring
Install Bluetooth dongle on factory radio
Get ac hoses made.
Hoping to get everything except radio and ac hoses done this weekend.
So, got the Trans stuff put back together. Same issue.
Then, swapped shifter with the racecar.
Same issue.
So, I took the inner boot off that I fabricated....
It's fixed!
Now, I need to figure out how to make another boot that doesn't interfere!
Also, the exhaust is crazy raspy at 3k rpm. I have a post about resonators where I am asking for advice. Any input is appreciated!
Hoping to get the alignment done tomorrow and the clockspring changed. Then it's just fabricate another shift boot and I can put miles on!
Well... drove the car around a bit. Trans fluids everywhere!
I need to reseal it.
I took it out. It's sitting on the floor in the garage thinking about what it did.
I did get the alignment mostly done. However, the bumpsteer kit I was going to install had boogered up threads and the tapers were not correct. I contacted the company to see what we can do about it.
In reply to wvumtnbkr :
Make sure it sits in the corner so it can think about why it did what it did and won't do it again next time!
Lolz. I should put it beside the backup transmission.
I didn't really even look at the car today. I had time to work on it and chose to not work on it.
Maybe a bit later this week. I have a plan for everything, just not enough time right now.
In reply to wvumtnbkr :
Don't make me come up there again.
In reply to Stampie :
Lolz. Oh, I'm motivated now. I have just spent about 2.5 weeks with all my free time getting it to this point. It is unsustainable.
Plus, I'm heading to Kentucky to go race this weekend so I need to spend time with the family!
I'll be itching to get back to it next week.
I figure, I need to make a trip to visit you and help you with some stuff in the next couple of months.
Ugh. I found out the rear main seal was installed backwards at some point by the po of the engine....
Changed that. Put the flywheel and clutch back on.
I can not get this Trans back in by myself. I'll see if I can get the neighbor to help early next week. Ooph.
Neighbor AND my father (who is also a neighbor) came over tonight.
We got the Trans in and 2 bolts in place.
I also ordered and received a resonator from Flowmaster. I can only fit one, so hopefully this stops the rasp a bit.
Things to do now...
Get a bumpsteer kit on the car.
Finish Trans install
Clock sprung install
Bluetooth adapter install
Internal shifter boot install
Ac line install
Charge ac system
Clean up wiring.
Okay... short on pictures...
Battery decided to die while it was disconnected. Charged it over night. Came out to a puddle of fluid under the car that had no smell but made my fingers tingly. Great.
Clean up the battery acid with baking soda and water. Fun stuff.
Got the Trans installed including the internal shift boot.
Got the bumpsteer kit installed. Still has some bumpsteer. I'm gonna look at installing the stock subframe I have to see if it will fit with less / no mods (down the road).
Driving it last night and 2 notable things happened...
1) rolling into 3rs gear it broke the tires loose at about 60 mph. Scared the crap out of me. It was wet and these tires are E36 M3.
2) blew the upper rad hose off as I pulled into the driveway.
Ah project cars. Just enough glory to make you keep working on it.
I've noticed that toe out on street cars, when combined with hard/old tires feels like bumpsteer. But goes away with changing one of the two parameters.

Agreed. However, I measured it. Ooph. Bad.
I can take a picture of how the tie rods are NOT level / parallel with the suspension arm.
New tires and a careful alignment will get me through until I do the subframe swap.
Got the upper radiator hose fixed. Just put some beads on the end of the tubing with my special pliers.
Still gotta work on the alignment some. Maybe I'll do the clockspring too.
Haven't done the clockspring yet.
I did hook up an diagnostic port to check for codes. There are none!
Been putting miles on here and there.
These tires are E36 M3. I can spin the tires in almost any gear.
I tried to drive my daughter to school on Monday. NO Bueno. Bolts came out of shifter! Had to limp the car home in 4th gear and get my truck. Got chewed out for being 15 mins late to work. Ooph.
Fixed that and loctited the bolts. Drove it to the grocery store!
I tried to take it to work today. There is some rattle and clunking in the front end that got worse by the mile. Turned around and grabbed the truck again. Ooph.
Still to do:
Tires!
Alignment
Clockspring
Ac hoses (ordered an adapter to connect to the compressor)
Then little things like:
Install o2 sensors
Make backup lights work
Get and install aftermarket radio
So, I jacked the car up, shook everything. Can't find the rattle / clunk. Weird.
I think I will need to drive it some more to pinpoint it.
Can't feel it through the steering wheel but can feel it through "the car". It's really bad when I accelerate. Sounds like the shock is moving around over every bump or something. I figured it would be obvious!

Check the ppf and diff.
No. I don't want to.
It only gets more expensive.....
I've checked out everything I can to find this vibration / clunk.
It is next to impossible to see the diff bushings. They are suspect at this point.
I believe they are original, so it might be time to order new either way.
Car is up in the air waiting for its new shoes to be mounted. Went with the Kenda Kaiser based on feedback from GRM (on Patrick's skyline for one).
I'm gonna drive it with the hood off and see how much the engine is moving to see if I need to get some poly engine mounts to curtail anything moving far enough to make contact .
Drove it with hood off. Engine only moves a tiny bit.
These tires are grippy! Me likey so far!
Hood is still off. Driving it to work tomorrow.
Rattle / vibration is still there. Less though. I do think it's the rear diff mounts. Ordered some whiteline ones for 43$ nice.
Driving it to work tomorrow for the first time!
I have made up fake ac lines. I think I know where to get some custom ones made. If so, I am looking forward to having ac in the car. Next big steps are new front subframe, ac working, and rear diff bushings. That should make the car mostly sorted. Exciting.
