As some of you know I have an 1987 Chrysler Conquest (Mitsubishi Starion). I've had it for years, I originally bought it in Virginia from a NASA scientist that my mom worked with. I drove it with the stock 2.6 for about a year. Then I decided to 1UZ swap it. Which I did. Then in 2014 I PCS'd to southern California and had paid for the car to be shipped from VA to CA. Once I got it in the garage I took the 1uz swap out and figured I'd go with something else. But, that never happened. I got distracted by old Mercedes etc etc lol. I sold the swap to an Asian kid in LA who turbo'd it and put it in his Cressida. Since then, my car has sat as a mostly clean roller in the corner of my garage with parts and boxes accumulated around and on it. I started thinking of other swaps to do, and I decided on an RB. But, then I got sidetracked again with another Mercedes lol. I just sold 2 of my 3 Mercedes. And decided to focus on the Conquest. The plan is to put a rebuilt 2.6 back in it with light mods and a MS3 in the stock ecu case. I'm going to try and keep the car looking as stock looking as possible on the outside and inside with minor engine mods (intercooler piping, turbo, exhaust, DSM MAF, etc). About 2 weeks ago I came across a crazy deal on an 88 Conquest roller for $400. It's the same color as mine and rust free. It has the tougher 6bolt rear and axles vs 4bolt in my 87, and basically new Griffin radiator and FAL fans, aftermarket shocks, and H&R lowering springs (rare). So, about $1200 in desirable parts. Along with a short block, ported head, trans, AC, and other stock parts that I'll be needing. I plan on swapping over all the goodies to my car as well as the rust free parts (my car has very light rust in some parts), rebuild the stock motor, use my rebuilt stock trans, semi-restore my car, and hopefully get it repainted in black because my paint is trash. I don't ever do build threads because I'm slow and I take huge breaks out of the garage. Plus, I'm not one to photodocument things. I'll try my best to keep this updated and post pics. Speaking of pics, I have to unbury my car out of the corner of boxes and parts. Luckily I have a 3 car garage or my neighbor Bob would bitch to no end about my foreign cars sitting in the driveway.
Cool stuff, man. I'll be watching intently. You're in California now? Are emissions controls going to be an issue, or with OBD-1, is everything going to be okay as long as it blows clean, and looks stock?
I'm active duty military so I keep my cars registered at my 'Home of Record' (Virginia). So, my cars don't have to be smogged.
Ca smog is about $$. Well, at least equal parts $$ and clean air which is why your car could emit nothing but rainbows and you'd fail if anything didn't look right.
Where in ca are you? I'm in el Segundo, right by lax.
And it sounds like you're going with the motor that came with the new car. Which one was it?
I'd suggest looking at the sr20det before a rb. Lighter, smaller, cheaper, easier, and easy to make plenty of power with one.

I'm rebuilding the original engine (4g54b). My car has permanent Virginia registration/plates. I don't have to smog any of my cars.
Excellent, I've always liked these! Yet another cool 80s car we almost never see anymore in the rust belt . Glad we finally get to see one in the builds forum at least!
I've got an '89 I'm working on, almost posted in the dead thread but I get to work on it a little each month...

Very cool. Love the start.

Cool to hear you are doing it stockish. Think these might be worth something someday and are awfully cool.

Cool build, I've got a very weak knowledge of these things, I know the engine is great but the fuel injection is way sub par, is that the main issue with these cars? Seems your taking care of it right away with ms3
It's a tbi fuel injector setup. Throttle response isn't all that good stock and reving isn't that great either. It's a turbo'd truck motor, running on a primary and secondary injector. Hopefully Scott's MS3 setup will fix this.

Have heard only good things about his work, hopefully I will be ready for MPI in a few years.

Hey if you need any parts let me know. It looks like I'll be having a lot of spares and there are a few guys around here with a lot of parts.
Always wanted one of these, looking forward to seeing your build progress
Starions are cool cars, and this sure sounds like a good plan for a project.
Port injection should really wake that motor up.

I had an '86 wayyyyy back, and my social circle had about a half dozen between us. That car was a blast to drive until the brakes had a couple non-stopping incidents. I rear ended a country squire wagon on the cross-bronx during rush hour traffic. The guy got out and looked at my bent nose cap, looked at his perfect shiny bumper, laughed at me, then drove off.
Two things I learned from Conquests and Starions...
- Never trust one with an un-cracked air damn
- Always have a spare cylinder head.
I've always liked these cars. I've tried to find one to pick up every once and a while, but they never popped up when I was looking for a project.
I'll be looking forward to watching this project.

I've always kind of wanted one, but now i've decided i only want a really nice one, so there goes that idea! I do have two different G54 powered vehicles i plan to turbocharge. The motor seems pretty decent on its own, so it's kind of a shame that it's so closely associated with the tbi system that was stuck on it.
Tomorrow morning I will be getting started on the car.
Had to bug bomb the garage this morning because of black widow spiders. What's up with the BW's here in SoCal? I got bit the other night working on my Mercedes
I have nothing to add other than that I like this car and this is what I hear every time I read your thread title:

Will post some updates tonight.

Well, that was the most casual reference to being bitten by a black widow that i've yet seen.
