Cutting up a GT40 kit car

That escalated quickly. Looks really good.

These are my favorite builds: The person jumps out of the airplane and starts reading the book "How to design and build parachutes".

I'm guessing he's being modest about the whole "limited skills" comment. I mean, you don't exactly show up on MetalMeet without at least knowing that is the place for this sort of thing. Impressive, and it's one less terrible GT40 kit car, so that's a big win.

I hand around occasionally on metalmeet both for advice and just to find threads like this one about the GT40. It is actually surprising how many "Newbies" launch into a full car from scratch. There is a father son Cobra build that is epic.

Great craftsmanship, completely futile wasted effort that could have been devoted to something meaningful.

Is it faster? No

Is it safer? No

Is it cheaper and easier to repair? No

Is there anything that make it functionally BETTER?

Maybe not, but it looks great and how many people can say they have an all metal Dino 206 that they built themselves? Not everything has to be purely functional. Otherwise Van Gogh, Cezanne and Matisse should have used all that perfectly good paint for houses instead.

I have a tendency to be that kind of guy at times. I get accused of having all sorts of special knowledge and access in the cars I build - both C&D and GRM have called me a "ringer" in print for my Locost build, the latter when comparing my car to an $80,000 Atom - but really any of my knowledge is a result of jumping and then learning how to deal with...well, whatever. Nothing beats the sink or swim method.

The Metalmeet guys are on a different level from mere mortals.

BUT, this is one guy, a madman privateer, vs a professional shop.
This guy is starting with a GT40 clone, and transforming it into a homage replica of a rare car.
He is not starting with a commodity car, and turning it into the same commodity car, only with an aluminum body.

What if he started with a stock Camry, and built an aluminum bodied Camry. It would require similar impressive skills, but I suspect with somewhat less impressive results.

Not to drag this on but...They are not going back with a stock Corvette body, this is more akin to the great Italian coach builders that re-bodied many Alfas and Ferraris.

Why does it have to be functionally better?

Is this Disco Volante any functionally better than the Alfa 8C it was built on? Why does it need to be?

Let me take a wild guess and say that you may be some type of engineer
