Between Professor braps neons and clutch knowledge I welcome his addition to this forum. Wonder if launching the car is the best way to break in a clutch as well as revive one that's worn?

When I put my compound 6 speed Cummins together that's how we broke in the clutch, held more power than the gear sets could ;)

I have never "worn out" a clutch either, I have bought some car with very slippy clutches.

I got my first NA miata with a "bad clutch" and a few clutch dumps later it lasted another 20k.

Yeah it's not intuitive but seems to work in certain cases.  Now seth remember to launch like that at events too.

So after another 20k it was worn out? cheeky

It had a clutch done at 140k, the car had 344k when I got it. Id say it lived a good life.

Rallycross scheduled for this weekend so it's time to get a few things done. First on the list is a torn steering rack boot. The passenger side was good but the drivers side looked like this.

The steering rack weeps a little but there is no way that rallycrossing with a boot like that is going to make it better. Now both boots look like this. Shiny.

Next it the fact that it's 3.5 hours each way to go rallycross and I'm sitting on a bath towel on the bare seat pan. Great for around town and when wearing a helmet, otherwise it gets old. I don't want to cut up the stock seat cushion, no matter how ugly it is, because there are several deucekids that want to learn to drive this car and they need the height. Good news is that I grabbed this piece of foam on super sale a couple of weeks ago. A few minutes with a marker and a bread knife and some trial fitting gave me this contour on the bottom.

And this divot on the top.

And it fits wonderfully. I'm a little over 1/2 inch higher than the pan, I just barely hit my head with a helmet on, but it's perfect for driving around. and I can pop it out when we get to the track on Saturday.

I picked up a set of snows when I was at the Challenge. They're a little.........beefier than the stock tires.

So much so that I can't cram one into the trunk. That means that somewhere between one and four tires are going to need to ride on the outside of the car. Anyone have any advice about strapping tires to a Miata trunk?

Ipen the trunk, put tures side by side like they would be mounted to the car. Strap to trunk hinges.

Ice moved a bunch of sets this way. Ive also strapped them to the roll bar with the top down, but that doesn't work here due to hardtop.

In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :

I think I figured it out. I let all of the air out of one of the tires and that makes it flexible enough to cram in the trunk. One will fit on the parcel shelf and I can buckle two into the passenger seat. I'll need to bring bags for getting the dirty tires home, but I think it'll work.

Vertically in the trunk is definitely the easy way. I think it's Garage Star that makes a rack that mounts in the trunk and puts the tires on the trunk itself for another option.

Just drive there with them mounted? The added height will help bring down the rpm on the highway :) It makes for a more relaxed day overall.

That's what I was just about to suggest.

It's 250 miles each way. Historically that's hard on snows here in Texas but I guess it's only going to be 60? So maybe that'll work?

I wouldn't worry about it. I drive on snow tires year round on some cars and don't notice that much extra wear with higher temps.

How old are the tires? Are you going to be driving like speedracer on the way to the event? I had the whole personal fleet on snow tires in to June this past year here in Ohio. They'll lose some some squishiness as you add street miles but the tread doesn't just evaporate from sane street driving. I don't get the impression that you're going for every last tenth at this event.

Just bring along one or two of your street tires as 'full size' spares.

A lot of our rallycross has me driving home in temps close to or sometimes over 100 degrees. At that temperature the tires are sticky to the touch. But that's not what's going on this weekend and I need to recalibrate to that. Thanks for having me pay attention.

I just want to point out that if Ferdinand was a complete running ramp truck you could just load up the race ready Miata and go.

If I promise to paint it pink and purple, can i get the miata back when abby turns 16?  That gives you guys 12 years to play with it

Kid#2 got his permit about a month ago. He drove me home from school in the Volt today. When he's comfortable he's going to learn manual and then he's coming rallycrossing with me, so we have to get that out of the way. Then there's kid#3, her plan is to out macho her older brother and learn to drive manual from the get go in the Miata. She wants it to be her high school car, stickers and all. If it makes it through all of that, I'll paint it purple and pink myself and deliver it to Abby in person.

I've been listening to too much Slip Angle podcast. Every time I hoon around in the Miata this thought goes though my head.

This makes me happy... I sent a screenshot to Jabaay and he laughed.

Spacecadet and I went rallycrossing. We had fun.

They had a bit of an issue with timing where their electric eyes failed to trip. They had to run cars one at a time. That combined with a full field of almost 50 drivers meant that we did a half day of runs in about 2/3 of a day and scratched the second course. We ordered a bunch of pizza and did fun runs instead.

Spacecadet helped me tighten the one Frankenstein bolt when it popped loose. My job was to hand him the wrench. I think the nut is supposed to be captive but mine isn't anymore.

Only five runs at about one minute each. I was 5/13 in mod 2wd and Spacecadet was... 8? He drove consistently better than me, gave me some tips to go faster, and hit more cones. The car was great. Moxnix put together an easy to drive suspension that can use more grip than we had with the 205 snows. I think we can be faster and we can certainly be more consistent from the beginning. Both of us are still picking up 3-5 seconds in a session while the fast guys start fast and only pick up 1-2.

We'll do this more and get better.

I did NOT want to work on the Accord today for no reason that I can explain. I'm going to mess with the Miata.

I fabbed up this little guy. Fabbed being a very generous word. Those are magnets on the back.

It went behind the tombstone and holds my phone where I can see it when I'm trying to get somewhere. It works great. I should paint it.

Cleaned stuff. Put the eyeballs back in. Put on the shift knob from bmw88rider. It feels nice. Thanks for that.

Then I tried, repeatedly, to order a roll bar. First I thought my phone was being a jerk by not getting signal in the yard. It does that. Mike at FM couldn't hear me very well and then the call dropped. Poop. Drove to the gas station. Call wouldn't go through. Drove to the gas station by the freeway. Call went though. Mike noted that their phone system was being moody. Then the call dropped. Couldn't connect for a few minutes but kept trying. Talked to Mike just long enough to ask him my questions, but not long enough to get answers or order the roll bar before it dropped again. Came home and sent an email. Maybe things will work better this afternoon?

We'll need to find a way to cover that ball in some kind of leather/cloth/suede quickly... or we're going to lose the skin on the palm of our hands in the summer and fall...

I usually kept some kind of a cloth over the ball in the STS car if i took it to work... otherwise it stayed in the garage.. and how low it was to the floor also probably played a part...
