A few months back, David S Wallens said he'd really like to see some of the old-time Challengers make it back to the event, and I was honored that he specifically mentioned my name. I felt the love.
IDK what I'm building yet, but I've been so inspired by the members of this community that I am announcing right now that I will be bringing a car to the $2019 Challenge, and (if everything goes well with the rest of my life) it will be the most ambitious car project I've ever done. So there you have it.
EDIT: I call dibs on the number 13

Elsewhere there is a lot of chatter about sub-class. The original sub-class, Aristocrat, was just a side bet between Robbie in the V12 BMW and me in the Q45 which blossomed when others wanted to play along too (Lexus, Lincoln, etc)
Looks like maybe there is a side bet brewing in the Corvair Class, aka: Unsafe at any Speed!!
Or, to keep options open and choices broader, a rear-engine class (be it either how the car was designed or how the car was modified.) That is, it's allowed if a rear engine was once there or it is now there. This would allow for a Corvair with a front engine or a pickup with a bed mounted engine.
Of course, there is a black VW Beetle who could kick all y'all's ass.

Well if you guys are going then I'm going too, but I can almost guarantee that this will be one of the least ambitious projects I've ever built.
Prepare to be underwhelmed

Yeah my wife said i’m not allowed to sell it.
No Corvair sub class! Otherwise I have to go all hipster and not like them anymore.
And now I feel kinda like Rick James, because yeah I want a Corvair sub class!
How about an air-cooled class?
So what did you buy already? You're wasting time here, there's only like 364 days left.

I'm playing with a few ideas. Only one of them *really* appeals to me, but it will be the most difficult / complex / involved. It will really push my boundaries and will require help from a whole bunch of people along the way. And it will have 315's, at least on the rear.
You took my 13!!!!
Dammit bobby.
Looking forward to $2019. I think im gonna have to up my game on the miata if i want top 10.
We have a few C-4 vette's here already, they can be had C H E A P, I have 2 both less tha 1,000 bucks each. but no vette cart's.
this year we should spend time sorting out what we have now and make them 'Appealing'. Y'all don't want me to finish my C4, you better hope all I bring is the Fiero
Aw. Yeah, it's been a little while. Glad to hear that you're going to join us.
in for your speech as well
In reply to westsidetalon :
LOL I had totally forgotten about the speech. Man, I hate public speaking.
The speech was necessary because I had to award the trophy to that year's recipient. It was last awarded to jhaas (RIP), who refused to return it in time to be awarded at the next Challenge. He put it on public display at his barcade, the Fort Sanders Yacht Club in Knoxville TN, then passed away only a year or two later. I miss that dude. :-(

damn, it's been 10 years...
# 13 huh? Well that's a fine choice. I run "lucky" 13 whenever possible---- as an homage to Smokey.... never could figure out why they call this a 67 Chevelle, when it's clearly a 66..... still one of the coolest "cheater cars" ever!
Um, yeah, 2009 was 10 years ago. I know, wacky. Come. We'll hang and do stuff.
