Oh dude that's gruesome. I bought goggles and a shield. Will try both and see what I'm comfortable / confident with.

With the eyeball squared away and some new PPE, I got to work on making the permanent parts of the engine box. It's a little cumbersome to explain but I'll do my best. The panel below the window has raised sections (toward the interior) and depressed sections (toward the rear). The vent holes I cut into the raised sections:
I extended the top cuts into (but not through) the recessed sections, to make short slots which will align and support the horizontal engine box panel:
I cut the side panels as laid out in CAD. They fit OK but need a little tweaking before welding:
I will add an upward flange on front edge of the horizontal panel, which will stiffen it up and provide an attachment and sealing surface for the removable top panels.
here are a couple views of the hot air escape path, from inside:
and outside:
The rear cowl panel is vented, as this where the OE Corvair centrifugal fan drew cooling air into the engine compartment. It is a low-pressure area, so flow over the body should help pull the hot air out of the engine box. I also designed the top of the box to slope upward to the rear. Together with the air I'm directing down the center of the car and through the header bags, I think the engine box temperature management will be acceptable.
Yeah, this thread is making me buy one too. I had one before, but it was an atrocious Harbor Freight Monstrosity. I am going to get one from Benchmark Abrasives, since I'm due for another order of cutting discs anyway.
Angry - vent path looks great. Seems like an awesome way to extract air.
I tell my students: "With goggles, you can still see. With a face shield, you can see that you're still pretty."
It was Christmas in February today, an anonymous someone sent me a "Super Protective Face Shield" via Amazon
makes me want to go squash a rebellion
No pix of work tonight, just cut and trimmed a couple more pieces for the engine box. I'll weld them into the car tomorrow evening. It's quitting time now, getting up at 4:45 to run before work.

Sexy in a fallout 3 kinda way.

after putting the firewall pieces back in place, I mostly just sat and stared
and thought about different ways to join the removable pieces to the permanent pieces, and how to ventilate the rear bulkhead without losing all its strength.
I have a plan. A plan that is good enough, and fits the theme. This weekend, I will turn the plan into reality.
Just now catching up on this thread, and the carefully placed "finger" photos is really hilarious

that pic was a gift from Stampie. i keep it around so someday he can say he had a finger in building a fast challenge car.
Added flange to leading edge of horizontal, and made them permanent via hot glue gun:
I also figured out how to hinge the cover for static display. It's gonna be cool. Only one more big task before the powertrain goes back in.
I've got everything I need to address the structure issue, probably have it done this week unless Plan A doesn't work.

wrong dog, wrong meme, but one of my all-time favorites so here it is:

Something to think about, when Monzora is finished, line up with Stampie on the quarter, photo of the finger taped to the rear windscreen, and continue to smoke is ass down the strip....

Such structure!
Many engineering!

Pic of doggo not showing up... Might have missed something here

Tried to upload a funny photo, but am getting an "must select image" error... And usually post from my phone
Since I had another cabinet door with hinges, I put them on the bottom of the forward part of top cover, so now it's a bi-fold:
which gives me a couple options for display:
Honestly, the car is so low that the bifold is totally unnecessary. Tomorrow I'll finish the top cover and stitch up the structure, and then the powertrain can go back in.

I hear you, but it's still cold here and I think my concours story works well with the scabby appearance.
This post should party
but I'm feeling my age today. I ran 7 miles this morning and am currently losing the argument with myself that working on MonZora is more important than going back to bed. I need a nap.
