Flux core 2 years ago vs MIG today. If you ask me which is which, I will send an internet dick-punch your way.
Aaaaaaand, I just ran out of wire. Looks like I'm making a run to Tractor Supply.

Don't know which is more annoying, running out of wire or running out of argon.
Probably argon, you can get wire more places.
Not a lot of time tonight, got one top panel cut down to size and tacked together, and the second one cut to size (pic before cutting second panel):

Want to ask so bad just so I could buy you a beer after I recovered.
I hope some part of the gym locker latch assembly is retained to latch the cover down. I should only show when the cover is open. I would never of thought of it if you had not posted the pic with it showing.
In reply to TurnerX19 :
i cherry-picked some latches off a scrap shipping crate, planning to use one on each side, near the bi-fold, then some as-yet-unidentified securing method on the front edge, maybe elastic drift-boi bumper cover retention things. no idea yet. that gym locker arrangement is *heavy*.
what i got from the shipping crate:
drift boi extreme kit only $10 but could be copied for pennies:
Dang, it's been a minute. Prolonged rain at 30*F last Wednesday led to a couple days without power, Friday was wife's birthday, Saturday was dedicated to cleanup and putaway, and Sunday I took wife and AK2 to the Detroit Autorama (and of course the Lafayette. If you know, you know). Anyway, none of that is Corvair related, except the basement of Autorama is beaters and rat rods etc. After seeing the Ridler finalists and briefly wandering the upstairs, we headed down to where the cars look like something I could build. Apparently both wife and AK2 agreed, because they asked if I'd be showing the Corvair next year.
Tonight I cleared off the welding table and zapped the 3 separate firewall panels into one firewall:
and I leaked a little:
Because I wasn't careful in removing cutoff wheel flash from a small piece of sheetmetal. Cut is barely 1/4" long but it's right on the knuckle. Anyway, I guess the firewall is truly mine now.
Missed you and the fam at Autorama dude! I went Sunday morning with some friends and had a late lunch at Ima on Michigan.
We got about 6" of really wet heavy snow Friday PM, lots more tree damage around us and lots of people lost power again, so I didn't get anything done on the car. Saturday I made a new support bracket for the engine oil dipstick:
and got that installed. Then I stitched up a few welds on the trans mounts and chassis, and then AK1 came home for spring break so I called it quits a little early.
Sunday I totally wore myself out on a dehydrated 7-mile run, then took AK1 out for lunch, then took a 2-hour nap, then changed oil in the Escape, *then* got started on installing the powertrain for what I hope is the last time. Here's where I left off for the night:
next up is fuel lines, then wiring, then buttoning up the cooling system, then first start. I really hope the Audi starter is up to the task. I'll hit the starter with 24V if I have to.

WARNING ! ! Carnage below ! ! !
"Because I wasn't careful in removing cutoff wheel flash from a small piece of sheetmetal."
Because I wasn't careful in removing the transmission from the Nova . . .
In reply to MuSTANK :
oh dude, you gotta give some warning before that pic. dang, i hope they got it cleaned up and put back together for you. that's grim!
Damn broseph, throw out the warning before posting that type of carnage!
You OK? That looks gnarly in the wrong way.
Ouch! What did you do?
I thought I got my finger today...picked up grinder with wire wheel on it and I subconsciously thought "I have gloves on"..
Well the wire wheel grabbed my nitrile glove (thought I had leather ones on) and it hurt...I was afraid to look ..but I was ok ... I had my face shield, dust mask and hearing protection but forgot gloves I had on were nitrile....of course wires were sticking in my jacket ....

That's the goal.
I will say that seeing monzora run is a major reason im coming to the challenge. The other is to watch suprang hold its own against it.
The finger gore reminds me, I have some 3d printed pieces in a box that I need to send to you.
Also do we have a "I did a stupid"/gore/garage berkeley ups thread? I feel like the amount of finger trauma between Angry, Indy Guy, MuStank and myself we have a pretty good start on a thread there.
RacetruckRon said:Also do we have a "I did a stupid"/gore/garage berkeley ups thread?
That was my goal with this.
Evolution of coolant pipe brackets. This happened after a trip to our nearest Waffle House (1 hour each way). All Star Special (scrambled well, raisin, bacon hold the weight, covered chunked peppered, peanut butter). It was inspirational.
also, 275/35 just to see how they look on the front. It's a little counter-intuitive but I might run square setup because I know the front end is over-sprung, so front could benefit from the additional width vs original planned 245/40
goal is to make 6 of those pipe brackets today.
V.3 of brackets is even more elegant. Pix when built. And got a special delivery from Racetruck Ron today:
any of you high-detail car model guys wanna make these printed emblems look like the OE parts? Paint required is black, white, gold, and silver (unless there's a good fake chrome).
The best chrome spray paint I've ever used is PlastiKote 615 chrome bumper paint. Of course, it's not going to really fool anyone, but it's surprisingly not bad.
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
Definitely add in a light coat of primer there. I forgot the Monzora emblem still needs a little bit of sanding to remove the support nubs. That was such a fun CAD project though.
I wanted to do a hot take on these, remove some of the detail and do a compression molded chopped carbon version but that wouldn't be in budget.

I painted my CJ chrome once. "Chrome don't get you home" was a common saying then so I said "Oh yeah?" Chrome with gloss black flames. Got home every time.
I think it was cheapo duplicolor and it eventually faded to a flat silver. Looked cool when it was shiney.
