I was able to bring the front end down a little bit today by installing the Ground Control goodies. The front struts are blown, the strut tubes completely full of oil, so it is largely temporary in it's current state. I've pretty much convinced myself to bite the bullet and go full body coilovers at this point. Hopefully there will be a sale on ST Suspension stuff soon because I don't really want to go the Raceland/Vmaxx/Rokkor route again.
The m10x1.5 tap I picked up to make the drop plates for the rear was a joke. It was pretty good for smearing threads into metal, not so great for cutting them.
Really? Why would anybody bother making a dysfunctional tap? That's very disappointing/frustrating.
This is such a fun thread. What coilovers and spring sizes are you thinking of using?
Well, I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon, but I just popped on a set of used Weitec GTs.
Some internet sleuthing shows the spring rates to be about 340#F/285#R. Hopefully they arrive before the weekend and don't have a propensity to puking oil.
Well, my new 'spensions will make it here before the weekend, just not this weekend. And, I'm already booked for working through next weekend, so I have a sad.
A Rockauto order containing new wheel bearings is due tomorrow (and some other stuff, but I have no idea what else I ordered), hopefully it makes it in before I head off to work so I can get something accomplished this weekend.
Just checked my order. Spare clutch cable and associated bits, later e-brake cables so I can ditch the brick I've been hauling around for 3 months, and another ignition switch. Good job, Past Erick, good job indeed.
I was able to press the new bearings into the freshly blasted and painted uprights. I'm 99% certain I took an after photo with the hubs pressed in, but it's MIA.
Also, today is the VW Scirocco's 40th Birthday (my car still has a few years to go)! So if that's not exciting I don't know what is.
Man, that thing looks awesome. Can't wait to see it all lowered!
Nothing like clean parts!
Those gold wheels look awesome! I love 70's color combinations. Growing up in a house built in the 70's, all I see are shades of linoleum and shag carpet.
Saw this on the local CL and thought you might be interested:

All of my parts are here. Everything is prepped and ready to go on., but there seems to be something hindering my progress.
Hopefully this silly business ends soon.
I love that the bumpers are so big that they catch that much snow.

Looking forward to seeing the coilovers installed, but it kills me to see that car exposed to the elements.

Yeah, it's a real bummer. We're within a year of buying a house, and with a house comes a real garage or shop, so you'll just have to wince for a little while longer.
Today I slapped the rear coilovers on without adjusting the perches; just how they arrived from the P/O. I did this for two reasons. First, I wanted to see how low they were running them, hopefully that will have some correlation to the amount of life left in them. Second, I'm lazy and it was raining.
Not quite level, but closer than it was.
I also slapped the new ignition switch into place, no more ghetto screwdriver starter trick. I haven't driven the car for weeks, hopefully that will change very soon.
If you're sitting at home, bored out of your gourd, feel free to draw some bitchin' stripes on the car. Seriously. Like this or this.
This one is badass, however I like the plain root beer brown look best.
Coilovers are on and settling nicely. I'll probably lower it another 3/4"-1" all the way around, but it's no longer in the nosebleed section.
I also gave her her first bath today, but she'll probably need another 2 or 3 before she is actually clean. Every little bit helps.
This is what I need! Inspiration to get my lazy butt moving...! Thanks!
I'm Jealous Again. Okay, I know you haven't gotten to drive this or the 850 much lately, but damn...
I think it wants a friend! http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/4341569820.html
So, it's been a month since I've updated this thread. What's new? Nothing.
The old girl just keeps burning through the miles. For whatever reason, this is probably the best running CIS car I've ever had(out of, like, 12 or something now). Which is weird because it was parked for 6 years, and completely neglected for an unknown length of time before that.
Most of my spare time lately has gone into the cleaning and flipping of used parts in my garage that I have no use for. It's incredible how much stuff I have that is worth actual legal tender, and it's even more incredible that people are willing to trade said tender for VW parts.
So, since summer is just around the bend, and the Revolution RFXs are due to go back on the Spider before then, I figured I ought to treat the Scirocco to a new pair of shoes.
I'm a po' boy, and the car lives on the streets, so there was no way I could justify the real-deal Panasports. These VTO Classic 8's are $475 (plus $65 shipping) on eBay right now and I just couldn't pass them up any longer.
Those are going to look sweet!
Excellent selection! I approve.
