What's happenin fellas? Been a while. Been back on the road with this BMW operation with World Challenge and SCCA and whatever else we race in a weekend. I'm here to bring along a little story of a 1971 BMW 2002 racecar I just purchased for $500! Yes, that's $500 doll hairs, bucks, smackerinos.
It is a box flared, M10 powered racecar that raced back almost two decades ago! Apparently, it has sat under a car cover for the better part of 6 years at the dealership with zero interest from anyone until I showed up.
Here is what I got for my $500:
Box flared, caged 2002 with logbook
Two sets of Panasports wheels
Mega-squirted, aftermarket fuel injected, individual throttle bodied M10
5 speed Getrag box
Limited slip diff
18 gallon fuel cell
brand new front clip
box filled with Tilton brake/clutch pedals, breather tubes, Weber carbs, headgasket kit, grilles and screens, oil cooler... too much to list!!
Here she is the day I bought her:
So, story begins today. The previous owner thought he would be crafty and would redesign the front suspension with heims and adjustable A arms and thrust arms. Failed miserably. So, I had to pick and pull a front subframe with steering box and motor mounts off a donor 2002 we have on the lot.
(previous owner decided he was gonna cut the firewall apart for some reason, so i tried tack welding it back in for the moment. Gonna finish it from inside..)
From there, I wanted to get the motor in to make me feel like I've accomplished something. Seeing the front clip is a disaster site, I decide I will knock out two birds with one stone; cut the old nose off and graft the new one on after I dump the motor in!
Cutting begins
Go and grab the engine
In she goes!!
End of Day 1 (today)
I guess tomorrow, I'm gonna crack the lid on this fuel cell to see what condition the bladder is in and how bad the foam has fallen apart.
Here is the laundry list of what it needs:
Complete wiring harness (gonna nic it out of the donor car)
Windshield (same, donor car)
Dash (came with some aluminum Days of Thunder dash, wanna swap it with period correct, yea, donor has one)
Seats
Brake lines, both hard and soft
Exhaust (I have a stock one, wanna beef it up)
Gearbox output shaft
Gearbox mount
Radiator w/hoses
Clutch, Flywheel, Pressure plate, throwout bearing, master, slave, lines
Fuel line (-6 A/N line that goes the length of the car
$500! That was a deal and a half.
I want to ride you across a frozen plain like a Tauntaun then cut you open and sleep inside your still warm husk.
That was probably a little bit forward. Sorry.
I'm not sure how to rephrase what Huckleberry said in a more "me" way, but I assure you I mean it in the nicest way.
Congrats on the acquisition, and what looks like a flying start on the build!
Phenomenal. I think I'm in love...
That thing is really cool! And you got a great deal.
I have a M10 from an E30 in pieces in my basement if you need anything.
The second car I ever bought was a '71 2002. I loved/hated that car.
This is gonna be good.
You had me at box flared 2002
I love the 2002s. You going to have a bunch of spares?
My 76 2002 was the most trouble free car I ever owned. Really for no reason.
Deal of the year so far.

That's funny, my '71 was one of the most trouble-prone cars I've ever owned.

As the recipient of a free race car I have to say I agree with you. He got an awsome deal! Can't wait to see where this goes
Whoa !
Did you have a Nixon mask and handgun the day that you walked into the dealership, 'cause you stole that ride!!
Gonna be watching this one for sure, Terrific beginning, I really do love the 2002 and that one has the small round tail lights . . .
Good for you !
Thanks everyone!
Build is going on hiatus at the moment as I just came back from Lime Rock for a PWC test and am jumping on a plane for Canada and will be gone for the next two weeks. Once I get back, I'll get back on it!
