By the late 60s body color trunks and a vinyl mat in the trunk. And you're right about the amount of prep.

glad i decided to high build the engine bay. I broke this bolt the first time I owned the car, forgot about it, spotted it on tear down, forgot about it, and bloodied my knuckle on it a few minutes ago. Welded a nut to it, got it out. Now the iceman tray will actually fasten to the car properly!
You keep mentioning laquer thinner to wipe panels. I would stay with a panel prep wax and grease remover. Bit worried about lacquer thinner on filler.
You don't need a tack rag when doing the high build. Any minor dust is going to be irrelevant at this stage. Just wipe the car and blow or vacuum the surface. Clean-room particle count only comes into play when you lay down the color.

I broke it out in another thread, and was told the same thing about the lacquer thinner. I picked up wax and grease remover at the flaps this morning to wipe down with. Never used it before, but willing to try!
So, prep the jamb of the passenger's door and wipe down. Then high build!
Brother Dustin is coming by to help.
Im excited.

As in melting / affecting it? I can see that since that is what is used as the original solvent.
In better news, blurple came in yesterday. Car is lacking final wipe and spray. Waiting for the reducer to be delivered.
Pop pop Crawford, when i was little (less than 10) used to respond with burple any time i asked what color something should be. Blurple makes me think of him and nana Crawford every time I say or think it. Very happy emotions tied to blurple. May actually be the reason i love THIS neon so much now that i think about it.
But my daughter loves the color name blurple as well. Hopefully it carries the same emotional joy for her.
not all that great apparently. But better than others!
Gonna be in the 90s today. And im working outside. Gotta work quickly.
I am looking at this and I do not see amy metal as the high spot(a). That means that you can keep sanding even if it removes most of the high fill you just shot on the car. All those filler high spots need to come down. So you are doing better than you think.
When you do the next round of high fill, give each low spot a quick shot of their own before you cover the entire panel. Gives you a better chance to get enough thickness of the stuff on the low spot to do the job.
The other thing is I think you are sanding with too fine of a paper . Coarse makes flat and fine makes smooth, You are still in the make it flat stage (sorry) and I would be sanding with like a 180 or so and only go to a fine paper after the panel had achieved the final flatness.

Ok. Just tried it out on the quarter. FEELS good.
Went until I got to high spots.
Feedback?
This looks pretty good from where I am sitting. Only a minor bit of guide coat that I can see on the rh side up by the bodyline just behind the door jamb.
I also don't see any metal, so the filler underneath could have been sanded down a bit more, but I would not worry too much about that. Tiy aeem to have a level surface.
The next coat of high fill you can go back to the 320 or whatever and start making things smooth now that they are flat.
art found a dew spots he didn't like. We wound up starting at 6:30 going over it again, and put more filler and more high build on.
Art thinks its ready for 400/600 and color.
Im whooped. Tomorrow is another day....
This is going to be so good when you’re done.
The ambition level of your projects makes me feel lazy and inspired at the same time.

Java and nohome: yall paving the way for me is why im making the progress i am. And i have to do something constructive to keep for going off the deep end mentally and emotionally with all the uncertainty, fear, and change of the current days. This gives me a plan to work, and a place to focus my nervous energy on.
