Before hitting the open road for that summer adventure, take the time to give your car a mechanical once-over.

Very timely, I'm just about to embark on a backroads trip from Ohio down to South Carolina, good things to think about and check beforehand.

If you are really going on a road trip you need more on your list than that. I do several multi day vintage rallies every year in a 67 E Type Jaguar and a 73 TR6. Most of our old cars we would be using on a road trip are at least 50 years old. A lot of things that seem ok but are on the verge of breaking under the kind of conditions a typical road trip produces.

A smart road tripper in a vintage car needs:

A small tool bag with sockets, wrenches , wire cutters, screwdrivers and pliers

a roll of duct tape

a small roll of tie wire

spare rotor, condenser  and points

assorted fuses

a couple of spark plugs

2 quarts of oil

spare tail and stoplight bulbs

a spare fan belt

light leather gloves to handle hot parts like a muffler

a couple of shop rags

small container of hand cleaner

some spare insulated electric wire 16-14

a few wire nuts for quick electrical repairs

a hidden spare key
