So this thread on the Grassroots subforum got me to re-up my CM subscription using the special offer code.  I had been planning on dropping my GRM subscription as I don't read nearly as much content as I do in CM, until at check out it offered me the chance to add GRM for just $9.99 so I did that.  But it got me thinking, what's the difference in demographics between the average GRM and the average CM subscriber, and how many people do subscribe to both?  Back when I found GRM circa 1995 I would devour every single page, now with a quarter century added to my life experience and interests I find my self far more aligned with what I assume is the average CM reader, rather than the average GRM reader, so I'm just wondering what the facts are?  Are the staff willing to discuss?

Cheers

Well, if Bill Gates woke up with my bank account this morning,  he'd jump out of a berkeleying window.  I'm closer to being a millionaire than Jeff Bezos, so I got that going for me.

Magazines will happily talk about the demographics of their readers. That's critical information for advertisers and advertisers are what keep the lights on and the presses rolling. You just need to look at the media kits. They're found on GRM/CM at the bottom under "advertise with us".

GRM readers (which are not the same as GRM forum members) have an average  household income of $127k and own an average of 4.9 cars. Readership of 48k. The little outline of a car used for the illustrations is an NA Miata.

The numbers are presented differently for CM, which is odd. That one says that 50% own 5 or more vehicles and 61% earn more than $100k/year. Readership of 45.5k. The little outline of a car is a Jaaaaaaag E-type.

I thought I remembered there being a larger gap between them. The really dramatic difference is online reach. GRM has 131k FB followers and CM has 12k. GRM website gets 432k monthly visitors, CM gets 49.4k.

Reading media kits is pretty interesting. The demographics for the AARP magazine are amazing.

I don't subscribe to either, but I do buy them retail locally when they interest me. It is more likely that I will buy a CM than a GRM - the ratio is probably around 2:1.

Do the math, it may be less expensive to subscribe to both than to buy one every few months :) You might even get a cool shirt out of the deal if you time it right. Takes the fun out of browsing though.

In reply to Keith Tanner :

I used to be like that too.  Then when I went on line the things the GRM site were discussing was always more interesting than the CM site.
Frankly I don't care diddly about investment potential.  Or pleasures of driving on the street. But the cars of CM  do speak to me.

Keith shared the numbers, but editorially I'd say a common theme is having fun with cars. Both magazine share a lot of DNA. Over the years, we have watched both audiences change, too. It's been interesting watching things progress.

CM is interesting because it brings the grassroots ethos to a demographic that's usually very much not grassroots. It's more "here's a fun car to own and why" and less of "this car is interesting because they only made three with brown paint and an automatic and the small engine and the roof rack and it is untouched".

brb, need to show this to my wife.

I've always been a "GRM" guy but something about the Elva restoration is just really cool. Maybe part of the publisher's evil master plan was to have a magazine for GRM'ers to buy when they get old...

Some of that data may be skewed a bit. Mainly about the forum/web subscription part. I read both forums but usually only access both from one website and that is usually GRM and that is because GRM has all the links to the sub-forums in one place. Probably don't access CM through CM site as often as I should. Wonder if accessing the CM forum through GRM is counted? I subscribe to both magazines but started with CM as I was/am interested in classic sports cars. Then went over to GRM when I bought a Miata and the Miata got me into autocross which led me to GRM. I know several people that subscribe to GRM and don't care about the forum. I can understand the different demographics but there are some of us that fit in-between or fit both. I enjoy all aspects of GRM, CM and forum for reasons that all exist. There's also a part of me that neither GRM, CM or the forum covers but I deal with it. There used to be a third mag I subscribed to that covered that missing link but it is no longer in print. Read all 3 regularly back then, now just the 2 regularly. Hagerty's mag is pretty good but more focused on the collector/investor which is not me. The SCCA mag that I now get would be more interesting if I knew some of the people in it.

The subscription rate is double in Canada or you might have been right.

I'm thinking about a digital only subscription - I recently did this with one of the high end audio mags that I had discontinued. We will see.
