We'll be posting some 2002 updates this week and let me tell you, we're starting to get some real momentum on this project. I hope to have it in the paint booth sometime in July.

So that brings us to an interesting crossroads in the car's life—it's just about 40 years old and has 305,000 miles on it. It'll never be stock again (thanks to the fender cutting we're doing for the Turbo-style flares.) It's also nearly a bare shell (still has suspension and steering column to make it easily movable) and so now, it's a great time to change the color.

Chamonix (White) is boring as heck. How about some Taiga?

Here's the color we've decided we're painting the car:

Green is ok, but some how Orange might have been better.

Love the colour. Definitely a lot less boring.

At the last local BMW meet, there were 10 2002s...5 of them were orange. Too common--although it's a favorite of mine. Per

Kinda how I feel about Red Triumphs ;)

Were I painting a BMW a non-original color, my first choice would be Daytona Violet. Not an original 2002 color, but it would be a BMW color. Plus, because of its relative rarity, it would be one of those "in the know" colors...

Of course, not everybody likes purple cars...

"Red Triumphs" ??? How about green ones?

Something like 200% of the red TR3s and MGAs built are still on the road.... The less common color is great.

I'm partial to some sort of blue myself.

I like the dark blue that one of Al Taylor's parts cars is...but the significant other loves Taiga as well.

Wow, five of them?! All of my time owning these cars was just before people started seriously restoring them. We all thought Inka was a rare color because we hardly ever saw one. I guess a lot of the guys who did the big resto thought, "..y'know, I've never had an Inka one..".

I still recall discovering that my last 2002 was originally Golf yellow underneath. I almost cried. Somebody had resprayed it red.

No, no, not Inka - you gotta have the other "orange" - it was called Colorado. My '70 was Colorado, and I still think that was the absolute best color for an '02.

Orange is my favorite color. However, that shade of green doesn't suck at all... Per rocks!!! If I live to be 102 I'll never have that guy's metal working skills. You go Per... Cheers, Scott

A friend had a Colorado 2002 back in the day, and that was my favorite color... Until another friend showed up with a Tii in that deep red/maroon/port wine color. With a tan interior, IIRC. That's what I was thinking of geting, until that day back in '73 when the gov did some economic finagle (was that the gold standard thing?) and every available desirable foreign car at the old, much lower price disappeared in one weekend.

I think you're thinking of Malaga--pretty color.

As for the Oranges, Jim is right—Colorado is the orange I'd choose. But thanks to the popularity of oranges these days (and the fact that I just changed the color of the sports racer to orange) green it is. Golf yellow was a close one too--very distinctive.

Scott--my metal working is only what I'd call "journeyman" I can just weld on new sheetmetal and form patches---curves and creases still befuddle me.

How close is Taiga to the leftover 914 Zambizi Green?

I saw an '02 in a gun metal gray suit once, added some class to it.

Hmm... I wonder how a 2002 would look in Laguna Seca blue...

It would probably look pretty good but I'd rather just have a LSB E46 M3.

I'd be happy with one of those in the stable for sure.

In reply to Jim Pettengill:

I'm still an Inka fan, but you're right. Colorado is absolutely gorgeous on these cars. I kind of miss the color palattes on cars from the pre-55 era. Seems like starting in the mid 70s, the only colors people bought were various greys, blacks, and whatever else matched the pavement. Camoflauge, I guess..

EDIT: Pre 55mph law, not pre 1955.

I just banged out the first installment of this project and although it was a running/driving car just 4 months ago--writing about that first month with it really made me miss it as a driver--I want to get it painted to get it back on the road.

In primer now-- (see project car updates) and I'm starting to work with the filler where the quarter panel was patched and a few other small spots.
