This one's got me stumped. It sounds like a half shaft going bad but Honda changed both shaft as part of the recall 5k miles ago. Under power noise lessens coasting it sounds like a hammer to the underside of the car. Putting it up on the lift the shafts are tight. Subframe bolts are tight. Bearings are tight. Do I need to check the shafts without a hanging weight? Now that I think I wonder if the spline bolt is loose. I'm hoping it's not a auto tranny problem with only 122k.

Edit: No vibration in the steering wheel

Engine or trans mount.

Just wiggling usually isn't enough to check mounts. You need to get in there with a pry bar to see how much slop you have.

Or hold the brakes and give it a little gas in D and R while someone watches the engine.

Mounts are good. But, pulled the wheels put in drive I can hear noise from either half shafts or bearings. My experience the bearing usually grind or howl. This sounds like the bearing or cv joint has one missing ball bearing as it rotates. Seems odd that both sides would go. I did have to make a very aggressive turn the other day and maybe that's all it took.

edit: my guess is it's the bearings since they are original. What brand bearings do we like? Rockauto? Discount code?

SKF, but not SKP... or maybe the other way around?  I forget.
GMB, but not FVP

Seems like one good brand comes out with an acronym and others try to piggyback and hope you get confused.

I used to always do Timken, but I'm hearing not so friendly things about them these days.  The front of the van and my flatbed trailer currently have SKF or SKP... the good ones.  Happy so far.  Van has about 60k on the fronts and the trailer has been to PA-FL-PA twice, PA-WV-PA multiple times, and PA-TX-PA once.

And the van isn't being easy on them.  I swapped the factory +32mm 16" wheels for monster +0mm 20" off road wheels that weigh a crap ton.

If it's a rotational noise and follows wheel speed, and if it's significantly worse under sharp turns it's most probably an outer CV joint. Don't buy the super cheap axles, you'll just be changing them again in no time. Did you notice if you have any torn CV boots?

Wheel bearings are usually a rotational noise only, tho the noise might increase with turns, it's not usually a banging noise unless it's ready to fail completely - as in burned up or broken, which you would easily feel just by grabbing the wheel at top and bottom and moving it.
