So it's all true and I have nothing to worry about?

Well..my AC does not work, my gear lever needs to be rebushed (ooo, shortshifter time!!!), and the engine does not shut off if the headlights are on, and the wife stole the keys.

Nothing to worry about there.

It's rowdy and fun.

The first thing to do when you get the car - change the oil.  VAG turbo engines tend to be really picky about oil and many owners cheap-out and use the incorrect oil. Especially as the car starts to get older.  Check the specs, but I found Mobil 1 0w-40 Euro formula was the easiest to get.

Sharp car. That's the best color on those. I strongly considered the R version in that color but the lack of sunroof led me to different cars. Still in awe of how capable they are lightly modded

Honestly getting the 60 ft times needed to run fast times in FWD is always problematic from my own experience and what I've seen.  FWD with 400hp running 12s.... maybe with good skills and suspension ironed out.  A RWD car with 400hp running 12s is way easier even if it is a big heavy car.  400hp can get a light car into the 10s or faster in RWD when setup to do it.  The big issue with FWD and drag racing is the initial weight transfer is fighting where the traction is needed most and when it is needed most.  AWD does great for street cars but at the pointy end of drag racing, it too becomes a power sucking liability.

What can you do with 400hp in a fwd Golf? Not trying to poke fun- if someone told me it ruined the car, I'd believe them. If someone told me I needed one, I'd believe them.

I guess mid-12's at a track are to be believed, after a quick youtube.

I have no idea how much is required to get there, how long it lasts, or how much NVH you're sacrificing. I think my ideal would be just a tune, and summer tires.

Hope it's a lot of fun. Idk why everybody isn't doing it. I guess that's the thing that makes me skeptical. Seems awesome. GL

I think you perfectly summed up my thoughts as I embark on this adventure. I have the same concerns and the same hopes, and figure it'll make an interesting story/video either way. If we didn't try new things what use would we be to the readers, right?

Despite Carvana's best efforts, pickup is still scheduled for this weekend. laugh

Looking forward to your first impressions of launch mode.  The DSG is a really great transmission.  Super easy to mod these.  The 2.0T has only a few foibles that you have to watch out for.  Enjoy.

I'm looking forward to it, too! Currently waiting on the storm to pass so I can get insurance so Carvana can release it to me....

I'll be following this with interest.

After my Touareg experience with a tune taking it to 300hp and 490 torque, a GTI is pretty tempting.

Very much this. My best 60' when I took the Golf out was 2.317s. I was launching all wrong and the AWD was not engaging (Rs are 95% FWD). Had I taken the traction control off the AWD would have engaged and I would have shaved a ton of time off of the 60'.

There is a lot to gain and I should be in the mid/high 12s once I work it out.

I'm sure it was improved between a Mk IV and a Mk VII, but the traction control in my TDI was comically bad.  If I was in a situation where it looked like traction was going to be iffy, the first thing I did was shut the traction control off.  With it on, it made the handling really unpredictable.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing how you do with it. I strongly considered a GTI or GLI last time I was DD shopping, but the ghosts of past VW ownership kept me away. But so many people love these things, and the aftermarket support is fantastic, so they must be doing something right these days. I know a few people with this generation of GTI/Golf R/GLI and they have been trouble free so far.

Update time!

After some interesting Carvana, uh, "customer service" I'm finally scheduled to pick the car up in the morning.

Hopefully they mean it when they say "Carvana Certified," because I'm registered for a track day at the FIRM on Friday.

What could go wrong? laugh

Service it even if they claim they did.

This is what the air filter in the Touareg looked like. I found it when the element collapsed, blocked the turbo inlet, and threw the ecu into limp mode. It had a fresh service sticker and the certified inspection.

I had forgotten about this thread, but I was driving around this morning and considering Carvana for a pending purchase.

FYI Cavrana: Tom's experience will factor heavily into my choice of vendors for my next vehicle.

My wife has a coin.  Her CX9 was stolen, and we needed a car pretty quick.  Carvana was pretty easy and efficient at that time.  I hope the car brings more joy and long lasting fun than the temporary fun of the big coin.

It was one of the easiest vehicle purchases I've ever had. No fuss, pretty simple, great communication, and simple delivery. The registration was completed quickly. I'm shopping them now for a vehicle for my wife. You do pay a bit of a premium though. It was worth it to not have to wander around town and deal with a normal dealership.

My only issue was the air filter. I assumed since they had inspected and serviced it that it was good. That was apparently not the case.

I'm going to be a little sad when they go out of business. I've been used car shopping the past couple of weeks, and the dealership buying experience is just so awful. Especially if you're looking for something specific and there's nothing available close by. Getting the dealer to answer your questions, then give you an actual price, then do the paperwork remotely is a nightmare. At least once I've nearly rage quit and just bought something from carvana. But the price premium is a bit much for me and they don't quite have what I'm looking for at the moment. The straightforward pricing part is especially nice now, because the current state of the market is "returning to normal" but not everyone has caught on and some dealers are still trying to get away with charging big markups on their listed prices, that aren't indicated anywhere until you finally get them to give you a total price and it's $5k more than you were expecting.
