Hi, all. Coworker has a base 2007 Cobalt, which I assume has the 2.2. It's recently thrown the MIL with code P0326 - Knock sensor bank 1 / single sensor.
How hard is it to replace the sensor? Can we do it in the parking lot at work?
For a $20 part from Rock Auto and a car with 150k on the clock, I'd like to help him fix it if I can. Thanks.
If im not mistaken its pretty easy to get to. If my memory serves me right you dont even need to remove starter.

It's on the intake side, under the intake manifold, not to hard to get to
...m...might want to 2.4 intake manifold from a later car ( easy to find at pick and pulls) and a throttle body adapter from chm motors sports ( cheap) and use the 2.2 t/b on you car, get and extra 15 hp And good tq boost. All very cheap to do. I am using a 2.2 ecotec engine in my Alfa Romeo spider, great engine

Heh, thanks. If it was me I would have been all over that. Do you know if I have to remove the IM to get to it?

GM Service Information says that removal of the starter is required. Not sure if that's true or if it just makes your life easier, been a while since I looked in a Cobalt engine bay. There is no mention of removing the intake under Knock Sensor Replacement or Starter Replacement though,
Removal Procedure
- Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement.
- Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) harness connector.
- Remove the KS retaining bolt.
- Remove the KS.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.
Important: The KS threaded surfaces must be clean before installation.
- Install the knock sensor.
Tighten
Tighten the knock sensor retaining bolt to 25 Y (18 lb ft).
- Connect the knock sensor harness connector.
- Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement.
No just get a 13 mm combo wrench,easy to do, no anti seize,on any parts, a light oil on threads is ok.
Starter is lower on block,( baseplate)

Cool, thanks to both of you. I’ll have a peek at the car tomorrow and see if it looks doable from the top down (preferred) or if I need him to come by my house so we can get it up on stands.
Just checked, 1/ 4 drive with ( on my engine) 12 mm deep well will take it out, after you break it free, , remove the 1/4 drive and finger the socket to remove the bolt. You can get it from the top, most likely not see it but feel for it next to it is the oil pressure switch.that has a plug in it
It's a fantastic engine, 4 bolt mains for the bearings. Bed plate,no individual bearing caps
Mine I'd dyno'ed at 227 at the flywheel. Going to lots of fun in a 2350 pound car
