The car has about 150k miles on it, and it surges under any kind of load, like going up a hill, accelerating onto the freeway, etc. It hasnt set any codes though. I want to get it fixed so i can get rid of it, but i dont know whats wrong. If it doesnt turn out to be a serious problem, once its fixed i will post it in the classified adds here if anyone is looking for one. lol

When's the last time you had the trans serviced?

In 100k miles i have drained the fluid, replaced the filter, and refilled it with fluid twice. Its my parents car, and my dad wasnt willing to have the transmission flushed or anything else.

So the fluid has 50K on it now Trans service on those is every 25K-30K according to the owner's manual (we have a N/A GT). I'd do another fluid + filter for sure.

Has the blower snout ever been rebuilt? Plugs/wires ever done? Fuel filter?

I guess i will change the transmission fluid and filter again, i hate doing it becasue the fluid goes everywhere. The plugs and wires are original, its such a hard job on those i havent ever felt like doing it. It has has regular oil and filter changes and the coolant changed every couple years, and thats about it.

I know you're not interested in extra (non-DIY) expense but you might consider a trans flush job where most if not all of the fluid is replaced. It takes special equipment to do it and most have a drop the pan option (pulls fluid out via dipstick tube) if you want to change the filter. Someone close to you might well have the service on special.

Plugs and wires are really, really easy. Undo the front two motor mounts (the ones on the top) and then attach an engine hoist or come-along to the pull hook on the back and tilt her forward. Takes less than an hour to do the whole thing.

You might want to check to see if GM includes you on the 3.8 recall list. If so, there's no point doing now what they're going to do as soon as you bring it in.

150K on plugs and wires and it runs poorly. Hmm, I wonder why ?

They don't do plugs or wires in the recall. The recall is for the large and stupid plastic wire holders that sit on the bottom of the valve covers collecting oil, dirt, and grease. I threw those away the first time I was under the hood of ours 2 years before the recall.

You'll be surprised how much more power you'll have and how much smoother that car will run after new plugs and wires vs. 150K parts.

Right now the gap is huge and it can't light the spark.

When I first got my 2000 Park Ave I changed out the plugs and wires since it was running a little rough. I could not believe the gap. The top of the plug was almost completely gone. Made a HUGE difference and wasnt that hard of a job.

GMs coils will eat a set of plugs every 75K miles wether or not they say they will last 100K.
