Good head, unknown bearing said to be spun.

If it were SE Mi I'd say a six pack of beer. But as your miles away then I'd say... Dunno, but 99 heads are very popular for sawps onto 94-97 cars. Got to be worth a couple of bills.

If the head really is undamaged, I'd expect to get $600+ out of it. Intake manifolds (which you need as well) are worth a few bucks as well.

Thankfully, it has the intake manifold. Is there a reason to rebuild this engine versus rebuilding the bottom end of a '97 and slapping the refreshed NB head on it? Essentially, are the con rods, etc. any different? I guess that of nothing else, I will get to learn to measure end play on the crank.

I'm not familiar with Miata engines, but I suspect it would just need an align hone performed on the mains. Take a look at the mains (bearings on & off) or have the current owner send a few photos.

Well, I am the current owner. Picked it up shortly after posting (leaving Florida shortly, and don't know when another deal like this will pop up. Have to get it our of the back seat of the wife's car soon though.

Sorry Carkid, it's only the engine, and it is in the back seat of the wife's Jetta as I type this. $150.00 cash. Just need decide which bottom end to rebuild, the '97 or the '00.

The only difference of note between a 1997 and a 2000 bottom end is the compression ratio. The 1999-00 cars were 9.5:1, that 1997 is 9:0. Otherwise, pretty much the same deal. No difference in rods as far as I know, although there used to be some incorrect info out there that the NB rods were weaker.

For $150, it's a steal. Definitely pull a cam cap off and check the condition of the cam journals, though. There are no replaceable bearings in the head, and if it gets starved of oil you can wreck it in a hurry.
