This is cut-and-pasted from another forum, but very interesting and worthwhile:

All are from the show "Car and Track". I've only watched a couple, but it reinforces how alarming tire (and brake) technology was back then (see 6:20 of the '69 Impala vid).

The Dasher was pretty damn advanced for its time, IMHO.

I love the old Car & Track show. I used to watch it on Speedvision. I loved how they always concentrated on handling and would wring any car out on the track.

Why is it their driver always locks the brakes in the braking tests?

Cause ABS was still 20 years away and the vast majority of their cars were riding on horrific bias-ply tires with maybe 5" of rubber contacting the road.

Ah. My cars don't have ABS either, but I've been spoiled by 4 wheel discs and good tires.

That Impala had holy crap body roll. And 0-60 in 13.5 seconds with a 396. Ouch. That said, it was fun watching the front tires buckle so badly the rims almost touched down in hard cornering. But a big block Chevy muscle car getting beaten in accelleration by a Jeepster, wow.

Am I the only one who suddenly wants a Javelin?

396 + 2 Barrel carburetor + 6,000Lbs = SLOW

Slow down Captain Hyperbole...

It's closer to 4200 lbs.

Remember, the traction from bias ply tires plus the wonderful suspension tuning of the late 60's makes for crappy times as well.

Thanks for sharing, today no work gets done. (good thing it is quiet around here on Fridays.)

I'm pretty sure that it was accepted to be the best way to stop a car up into the 70s. I can't find an y other way to explain it.

Base Caprice's were around 4500Lbs, so a loaded out Impala with power everything should at least tip 5000. And have you ever weighed an iron-headed emissions-era big block Chevy? I honestly would not be surprised if that particular was 6000Lbs with fuel/driver.

I had to laugh, "The 71 Javelin has front fenders reminiscent of the Corvette, but that is where the similarities end. This car is a handler."

Considering the 71 Javelin dominated the Trans Am series that year and also racked up wins in Production, ARCA, and Grand Am, I'd say so

True! But if you asked most people which handled better they would say the Corvette. They would be wrong in my opinion. I just thought it was funny that they said it out loud. I was never a fan of the 71 Javelin. I always preferred the first gen body style.

I enjoyed that show on Speed. I think some subliminal ads are embeded though. It makes me want to smoke cigarettes, lay asbestos floor tile and put jello into an olive green fridgidaire.

That '71 442 was pretty impressive, comparatively.
